Currently using a D60 with a couple of lenses, was looking at going out tomorrow and picking up a new kit or just body for about £400, so only looking for entry level stuff I guess.

Is the 1000D any good? or is it worth moving to another brand and say a D3000?

1000D is very good for the money, live view on a sub £300 SLR is rather unexpected!

Saying that and having used one, it feels cheap and light, i like my SLR to have some weight to it and not feel i could break the camera if i squeeze to hard...

If your starting again, check out PENTAX's stuff, i moved from canon > Nikon > pentax and i <3 the pentax more than anything i have ever used...

I got a refurb 500D for less than £400.

Resolution:
1000D - 10.1mp
500D - 15.1mp

FPS:
1000D - 3fps (Jpeg, 1.5fps RAW)
500D - 3.4fps (Both RAW and Jpeg)

ISO Range:
1000D - 100-1600
500D - 100-12800 (better performance at 400-1600 too)

Video:
1000D - None
500D - 720p @ 30fps and 1080p @ 20fps

Screen:
1000D - 2.5" 230,000 dots
500D - 3.0" 920,000 dots

Autofocus:
1000D - 7 point, 1 cross type (f5.6)
500D - 9 points, 1 cross type (f2.8)

Where did you pick the refurb up from? So going by the fact you hav ignored the nikon stuff, its not worth looking at the d3000?

Jess are currently doing a 450D with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens for £450 after £30 cashback which seems reasonable.

I have a 52mm 1-1.8 and a 28-90mm 4-5.6 (horrible lense), is that 18-55mm any good or should i just stick with the body and get a different lense?

Often in my opinion, it's the lens range and the body shape for the end user than makes or breaks a deal. Have you tried the other bodies? IMHO, the Nikon D3000 is too dainty for my hands (yes I know it's funny coming from an Olympus E620 user, but it just feels too plasticky).

The 450D is recommended if you don't mind the plastic body, and the kit lens is fine, expecially compared to your previous zoom lens.

Others worthy of a think is indeed the Pentax K series, the Sony A series and the Olympus E system. The Olympus is the only smaller sensor out of the bunch, but also the one that IMO offers the most bang for buck in terms of features in Body and the kit lens.

Not trying to be a fanboy, just trying to point out:
In body IS, so ANY lens attached to the body will have IS
I know the Sony has them too, but IMO, Olympus trumps it with better body build, kits lens and extra features like the ARTfilters for people who don't like post processing photos (E620 body).

Anyway, the take home message is: go out to the shops and play with any of the bodies out there. Be it Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony or Olympus. Find the one you like and then go for it, most entry cameras are pretty much the same anyway. It's probably the kit lens or extra features for the money that sways the decision when any body feels right.

p.s. BTW, there's an offer running for the E620, FREE grip + battery when purchased by the end of the month (for the grip anyway)

Thanks Mr Jones, gonna go out and have a look see, I do like a ncie solid body as my D60 is quite hench.

I wasn't ignoring the Nikon stuff, just you're already with Canon I thought you may want to stick with them.

I got the 500D from the Canon outlet on eBay. I would say the 500D is a slightly better camera than the D5000, the next step up being the D90 which is better again.

Like Mr Jones says, go out an have a play. You might find one brand much nicer to use than any of the others.

I tried the nikon but it just didnt feel right in my hands, the grip is a little tight to the lense for my hands.

So i went for the 450D kit, the lense seems ok but my 50mm is now producing some really nice pics.

First pic with the 50mm:
