I have my pc (see sig) and I went from 3.0ghz to 3.6ghz.

However, in intel burn test the temp spiked to 100c, so I stopped the test without hesitation.

I have an artic freezer 7 pro - It was from ocuk but seems a bit flimsey and crappy.

Would a better cpu cooler sort out my temps or is 1.45-1.5v on air on an e6600 just too much whatever air cooler I try?

Thanks

The freezer 7 pro isnt a bad cooler on a dual core, used one on an e6600 at 3.6ghz on 1.5 vcore, temps topped out at 59c orthos load. Id suggest reseating the cooler and apply fresh thermal paste.

The case is an Antec 300 with no extra fans other than stock. Current fans on low.
The cooler has artic silver on it but the old stuff was just wiped off really hard (no alcohol rub was used) and the paste was applied 3 years ago.

I take it that in its stock configuration the antec 300 doesnt come supplied with any front intake fans, if so id look at getting a couple of fans for the front to bring a bit of air into the case, and also when stress testing run the fans a bit higher, also after 3 years of use id definitely redo the thermal paste.

I used to use the acfp7 in my antec 300, before i went low end water, on a E6550, what is really needed id say as above get 1 or 2 fans for the front intake, it really is worth it, for temps, and ur harddrives will like u better too.

Also if u hav'nt change tim in 3 years, might be a good idea to do that also. The acfp7 is'nt a bad cooler at all, but ofcourse, it won't be as good as the top end air coolers ofcourse, so would greatlly benift from intakes.

For the money its retails at I think it does a good job but I felt the same thing about it being a bit flimsey! :D

I think its worth spending the extra on a premium Aircooler once you start overvolting and overclocking!

I've always used and recommended the Thermalright Tower heatsink as they worked good for me but sadly the prices on the TRUE's have risen quite steeply over the year! :(

Having said that the 3rd party Premium heatsink market has loads of new players producing some great alternatives so your kinda spoilt for choice!

I been testing this model for a month or two and found it really good, just as good if not better than my previous favourite the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme . . .

ThermoLab Baram

£28.99 inc

Official ThermoLab Baram Product Page

Fits just fine in an Antec 300 and comes with everything you need except your 120mm fans . . . inc two sets of fan-clips as standard for crazy push-pull configs. Having said that it is optimised for low pressured airflow and can under the right conditions run completely *passive* . . .

Did I nearly forget to mention the uBer smooth flat and polished base as standard!

You've cooked your thermal paste. Redo it, remove the overclock, and get a better case before trying again at smaller increments.

You can cook thermal paste?
With the cpu on a very small voltage increase for the 3ghz it runs on at the moment the cpu does not go over 61-62c on IBT, around 60c in orthos (the cpu fan only ramps up after about 60c).

Tbh, if a cpu is hitting temps that high, the first thing i do is check the seating and paste application. Regarding the thermolab baram cooler, im sure it would be ok on a dual core cpu, but as far as a high fsb clocked quad it doesnt even come into the equation, tried it on a 3.8ghz q6600, rubbish compared to my old TRUE black.
