Very impressive, Would be amazing if the UK had a high speed network like this linking all the major cities.

Other than the fact that this is nothing special and anyone could do the same with slave labour, it isn't even that fast.
Notice how the Daily Fail quotes the average speed for the Chinese train compared to the average speed of the French/Jap trains. Sounds fair but it isn't much to do with technology but the number of stops and length between them. I am more interested in top speed when taking about technology.
China is freaking massive and probably has lots of long sections of straight track.
According to Wikipedia the TGV is faster.
A TGV test train piloted by Eric Pieczak set the record for the fastest wheeled train, reaching 574.8 km/h (357 mph) on 3 April 2007,[1][dead link] and a TGV service holds the record for the fastest scheduled rail journey with a start to stop average speed of 279.4 km/h (173.6 mph).
However it doesn't matter because China has a 430km/h MAGLEV so they are actually superior, you have to hand it to them, nice work. But still there is no need for it in our country, it just isn't cost effective as it is too small. It would be nice but it is better to wait until it is a bit more cost effective unless you want communism and to become a slave labourer.

Not a single us oil company (nor uk iirc) has gotten an oil contract in Iraq China has though iirc.

Indeed there is a need for transport. Not specifically Maglev, Maglev is so un cost effective we already have a better solution, it is called an aeroplane. If the government bought everyone plane tickets to get to work it would probably be cheaper and better.
Don't get me wrong, I would love a Maglev train but they just aren't practical yet.
It's an amazing achievement, but when you only pay your workforce £3 a day and don't really care about how many die, you can do amazing things.

Aeroplanes are hardly a practical solution for relatively short commutes of say 40 miles or so
They are used quite often and successfully in the highland and mainly the islands.
Would they cope with thousands and thousands of commuters heading to and from work daily? would they shorten the overall travelling time enough for it to be worthwhile?

in all honesty, of course not. i wasn't really following the coversation well
I don't doubt that for a second but it is a bit different cramming thousands and thousands of commuters into planes for a 30-40 mile commute into work in a built up and much more highly populated area.

And how much use would a train be that takes 30 miles to get up to full speed if there is a train station every 10 miles?
Obviously Aeroplanes are also crap for commuting short journeys, that is the point I was making, maglev isn't probably any better at it either. It takes time to speed up and slow down. It would at the most be a route between major cities. in its current form it is never going to help your average joe get from the suburbs to the city centre. (like a plane)
