if so, what is it ? the mac laptop is £700, the average netbook is £300 ??????????

I need to convert my whole rig to photography based mac hardware at some point, but i struggle to see anything i can use as a netbook ?

The don't currently make anything you could call a netbook.

Both the Macbook & the Air are both 13.3" screens so arguably bigger than your average netbook.

There's constant rumors about a tablet, and also a netbook - although I think the table will probably be more likely.

I'm curious what you'd want a netbook for in relation to photography anyway...you're not going to fancy processing much on a traditional netbook spec machine and if you're carrying round serious photography gear then the extra weight of a 13' laptop compared to a netbook is fairly negligible...

Considering that most netbooks only have 10 inch screen, with an intel Atom processor and poor graphics.. you'd lose a lot of screen size, power and productivity in the place of a tiny bit more mobility.

@ at the thread starter: If you want a netbook/laptop Get the basic Macbook. It's quite a bit more expensive than your bog-standard Netbook... but it's a lot more practical.. to a certain degree.

You say your building a photography rig. Surely it would be better to get a desktop with a much larger screen and a lot more power for your needs? Even with a Macbook you'll still lose out in comparison and with much more powerful desktops in relation to Laptops being built nowadays... you would win in every situation.. unless your intending to lug it around... in which case... you wouldn't.

To the OP, avoid netbooks if you want to shift your stuff over to a machine for photography. The Atom CPU just hasn't the clout for processing, and the onboard GPU will most likely be an Intel integrated affair if my two NC10's are anything to go buy.

Netbooks are lovely machines but if you're aiming to do anything serious then look at a Macbook as mentioned.

Money is the main issue, really.

I actually disagree a bit, netbook are built to a price, lacking build quality compared to ultraportables and lacking power compared to, well, anything. There are some better than others in all those respects but my personal view is being a good netbook is a fairly low bar to clear. Fine if you're happy browsing on a small screen and can't afford a £1200 ultraportable (nothing to be ashamed of there) but not much use otherwise.

If money is an issue forget a laptop, just buy 3 or 4 4GB compactflash cards and you'll be able to shoot all week without having to download stuff, no real need for a laptop while out and about...

I have found the closest thing to a netbook Apple have made was the old 12" Powerbook. You can pickup the old 1.5Ghz G4 one for well under £300 (sometimes even £200) and they are pretty decent. Only downside is no Snow Leopard - but I haven't even bothered putting it on my MB yet, only my desktop.

I have a similar opinion. I had an NC10 and absolutely loved it. I sold it to fund a bigger and better laptop and in the interim I've dug out my really old IBM Thinkpad X23. It's very battered and beaten up and the battery dies after a few mins. But this thing is not much bigger than a netbook and is still far more powerful with a bigger screen. Admittedly the battery life (even with a new battery) would not match a netbook but for everything else I think that hunting around for an old ultraportable could be a good idea.

The PowerBook G4 12" will be an absolute dog these days.

I wouldn't buy one just because it's slightly smaller than a MacBook in 2 dimensions.

I'm using one right now:)

Runs leopard, photoshop cs4 and plenty of other stuff pretty well! ok I wouldn't buy one unless it was a real bargain, but it's no dog.

I remember seeing somewhere that when someone asked apple if they were making a netbook apple said that they were too small and didn't have enough power for conventional use (or something along those lines :))

But of course when they inevitably do it'll be the "BEST THING EVAR!!!1111". Despite die hard apple fanboys online saying theyre crap (strangely enough because apple have nothing to directly compete with the netbook).

And they are largely right. I think many people get dissatisfied with a netbook after a while. A MB or MBP 13 is ideal for these people (cost aside). What I think Apples tablet will be is a touchscreen media player capable of playing video, displaying books, and browsing the internet through integrated 3G.

There's not enough margin for Apple's liking. Everyone is already using cheap ass widely available hardware so Apple has no advantage.

To answer the OP's question... No.
