Confused by my new Xbox 360 Elite

Was annoyed by exactly the same thing when I got my elite last month. Managed to get the optical break out box and hdmi cable off the bay for less than a fiver inc delivery :)

Damn you and you surround sound owners. Never had surround sound at home :'(

Anyway, I just output from the TV to my hi-fi via phono and my TV also has optical out so I would expect yours to be the same. I'm sure thye justpass through so there's no wizardry in the middle.

The optical out on TV's normally only give out stereo sound (2ch) ;)

I bought my 360 Elite in an Argos deal, it came with HDMI and a cable!

For some reason they have to bundle a HDMI cable with the Elite - now that it doesn't come in the box, I've not bothered to get down to the reason why.

Probably something to do with the way A###s advertise them as being High Def with a compatible tv which they obviously aren't without the hdmi lead. I've bought 2 elites this year for prezzies - one fromthe jungle and one from A###s. Only the A###s one came with a hdmi lead, it was an alba branded one in a box taped to the elite.

Wished I'd got them both from the jungle as I got stung on the other one. A friend works there and should have gotten me option 1 with Halo ODST and the enterainment pack but thought they were doing me a favour and got the 5 game bundle with the family entertainment pack and PGR4/ Sega tennis :(

It doesnt need to be HDMI to be HD though, so that wont be the reasoning I wouldnt think. Maybe its just a nice gesture. A fair few shops sell PS3s with HDMI adapters included, In the same way you had one taped to the box. Im suprised the same doesnt happen more often with 360s.

I hadnt untill recently and it makes things so much more enjoyable. Everyone should have it. I went down the hacking an old component route to get optical out and HDMI to both fit at the same time and it works a charm. I will admit that the cat is not a fan of airstrikes on MW2 since having surround and the other half is not best pleased either :D

Your right, it could be vga or component instead :p Which makes hdmi the obvious cable to bundle as it's a. cheapest and b. useable to more people.

Or you could be right and it's a nice gesture. Afterall HDMI leads can be bought for sub £1 in quantity without trying to hard.

It could be the reason why they bundle a HDMI cable with it - I know its due to some obligation and not just being nice... I've just never bothered to question it.

The HDMI cable and audio breakout adaptor got removed from the Elite when the price was cut a few months ago. The separate pack was £20 in the local retail emporium last week which is a bit damn expensive. Unfortunately the old component lead with an optical out on it blocks off the HDMI unless you start hacking them up.

I got the pack from an auction site for under a fiver delivered.
