New car (That doesnt cost 25k)

Ever thought it might be that I don't get the appeal of a 'normal' BMW ? I understand why others do, but again it's just my totally irrational point of view on those sort of cars :-)

So why are you buying a Golf GTi then? They're more 'normal' than a BMW.

You dont get the appeal? The appeal is the same as that of an M3 - it's RWD, and it goes reasonably well - just less so than the M car.

How can you not get the appeal of a 230bhp RWD Car but totally get the appeal of... a Golf?

Ok.

I don't really feel surprised that the owners of a 330d and two 530i's are confused by this state of mind. To you, your cars are perfect, to me I appreciate them without doubt but they just are not for me. Hillariously in your minds I think the gti I sat in felt surprisingly 'special' for a 3 door family hatch with slightly more power, tuned handling and a pretty dress and shoes.

I think the thing is I'm kind of not wanting a balls out action hero car for a while. I completely accept that a golf gti is 'less' of a car than a BMW in regards overall quality and potentially driver enjoyment (only nicks m3 has made me omg in all the bmw's I have driven, and to that point Pete's m5 with it's hillarious acceleration)

I also own what is essentially a Golf GTI, only quicker.

And as I've said time and time again, the more fun car... is the diesel.

The e36 325i I had was also better than the OMGDULLNESSLOL of the VAG, or indeed ANY VAG I've driven.

To be honest if you think a Golf GTi is more special than a 330ci you're deluded. Sorry, but there's no other way of putting it :(

You simply can't use the boring/less special/whatever argument when comparing the two.

It's not just a Golf though is it, its a properly tuned Golf GTi with no compromise, the same way a M3 or M5 is, a BMW M sport model has the compromises the M3 or M5 does not. The M sport models are more like Golf GT's or Golf TSI whatcha mcall its.

Errr a Golf GTI is a normal Golf with sports seats, Sports suspension, a Sports bodykit and a 200bhp petrol engine.

In I guess the same way that a BMW 330i is a normal 3 Series with... sports seats, Sports suspension, a sports bodykit and a 200ish bhp petrol engine

I really don't know where to begin with this post...

Right, but its the top level sports kit on the GTi, no compromise, the M sport kit on the non M models is not the same as the proper no compromise kit on the M3/M5, or am I mistaken?

In what way is a run of the mill FWD hatchback with 200BHP "no-compromise"? What does that make the R32?

I dont really understand your point to be honest. The GTI isnt the top of the range Golf even - the R32 sits above it.

Do they (R32 and the GTi) not share the exact same suspension and other sport kit? Can you confirm that the M sport kit isn't the same as the M3/M5 kit?

What are you dribbling about? It's not a no-compromise car, a no-compromise car is something like an ariel atom, or a lotus exige, or to some extent a Megane R26.R.

Can you hand-on-heart say that the powertrain, suspension, chassis, etc of the "no-compromise" golf is better than that of a 330ci Sport, regardless of the 330ci's comparison to an M3?

Actually I think their suggestion of a 330CI has less to do with them being BMW owners and more with it being a spot car with the brief that you've given us.

It is more practical than the S2000 and yet still retains come of the lulz and excitement that only a RWD platform with ample amounts of power can provide. I don't understand how you'd consider an M3, but won't give a slightly lesser model a second glance. It's still a RWD coupe with a slightly less powerful big six up front, just without the associated running costs,

I really don't see how someone who is used to a bit of excitement in their cars can find a high mileage Golf GTi "special". This thread reeks of irrationality.

The R32 and the GTI have different bodykits. No idea about suspension.

Can you confirm that the M sport kit isn't the same as the M3/M5 kit?

What does this have to do with the GTI

The M5 and the 5 Series Sport do have the same bodykit, but the suspension is different. The M3 and the 3 Series Sport have a slightly different bodykit, and suspension etc is different.

But

I meant no compromise on the sport kit, not the whole over all car. In the same way the M3/M5 kit is no compromise and the M sport is compromised (if it isn't the same) The GTi and R32 kit is the top level kit for the car, the M sport kit isn't.
