New car (That doesnt cost 25k)

Sounds like you're changing for the sake of it and will regret it after a while, to be honest. It's not as if you need a practical car and you don't even drive to work!

I am in part changing for the sake of a change, but also there are reasons why I want to get something a bit more practical for space. Regarding saving up and getting the 911, your right I could do that, but I think if I am fair and honest to myself, whilst I could get the 911 in 12 months I'd still be renting. I need to get myself on the mortgage ladder at some point so I'm not 40 and still renting !

So why get a dull FWD hatch? There are plenty of cars out there that fulfill the "practical" aspect whilst still letting you have at least some degree of driving dynamics.

Or are you hell-bent on getting the newest rectangle of plastic you can get instead of sacrificing age to get a more interesting car?

It's running polybushes, harder springs, 32/30mm thick anti roll bars, full chassis bracing and an open induction cone on a 9000 rpm engine with a soft top. I know it's nothing to go by for accuracy, but my iPhone sound meter goes off the chart (106db) at vtec changeover

Sounds brilliant

I honestly didnt think the golf was dull. I certainly think it would still be a laugh round the track, although granted a totally different experience to my s2000.

If you have some other suggestions paradigm, fire them my way, i'm all ears for options !!

Get an E46 330ci or something?

Given that this thread doesn't really give a clue as to what you really need and want from a car it's hard to say.

Just how practical is practical? Just how often will you (if at all) track it? How old is too old?

Oh, and as the owner of a high-powered FWD VAG hatch, you WILL find the Golf boring, trust me, it's only a matter of time. You didn't find it dull on the test drive because it was different to what you are used to. FWIW the first time I drove the Cooper S that is sat on the drive I thought it was quite good, now I hate the thing.

Im sticking with my guns on the Focus RS Mk1, prices have come down on them since the release of the Mk2 so you can get a decent one sub 10k and are highly tuneable with a great community (rs owners club, FRSownersclub etc). Ive driven both the standard and RS focus and drive very different IMO (down to the wider track, LSD, Turbo).

Round the track they are a hoot and can be chucked into corners without worrying about understeering off into the distance.

s2000 are also far too common for my liking, something unique and special about a FRS :)

The whole thing still seems so daft to me, just keep the S2000 until you can afford to buy something nice to replace it, or your circumstances change and you have to change it.

Changing it for a Golf GTi is pointless and you'll regret it after about two weeks.

Is this because of "her indoors"?

Edit: I only ask as this just doesn't seem like you. You're very fond of your car and all the fettling you've had done to it, I just can;t see you being happy in a fwd hatchback.

I spoke to fox about this earlier. The only e46 I could see myself in would be an M3 or M3 CSL. Both of which aren't really an option at the moment.

I'm honestly not fussed that much on age. It will definately go on the track, lets say 2-3 times a year? I'm hoping to spend a bit of time with Nick in the 318 more now, so I'd just use it as a bit of a fix. I wouldn't expect to be keeping up with 911's like the s2000 does !

I'm interested in your point on finding it boring though. I actually quite liked SilentBobs Cupra R on the track, it didnt quite have the... soul (?) my s2000 does, but Im walking into this accepting that. Almost anything will feel dull after the s2000 I think, unless I consider an e36 M3?

... focus RS blah blah ...

I see your point but I'm not really getting the focus RS if im honest. no rationality round my decision i'm afraid

I'll reply to both of yours together :P

110% Bek has had no involvement in this. Her exact words were 'what? but you love the s2000? what are you going to mess around with now?!'

I think in part, I'm bored of the s2000. It's a great fun car, but I just fancy a change really. I see this as a chance to change into something with slightly more practicality, but still retaining some (accepting not all) of the driving fun to tide me over till I can spend some proper money on something really special.

As I've said all through this thread, I will consider and look at any car.

But you can see yourself in a Golf GTi... right!

You've done a major U-turn then since I last spoke to you if you're now bored of it! The boredom wave will soon pass if you keep it :)

That's where my money is going, although you'll only need £4.5 - £5.5k unless you want a 'vert.

From a driver's point of view it's a very unrewarding car to drive, typically dull VAG driver feedback, and nothing really in the way of feel or poise. They aren't slow, as anyone who went out with me will testify, but I dare say the passengers were having more fun than I was. Push too hard and you understeer blandly off the track, don't push hard enough and it was just like driving on any other road.

Really? I can count on both hands the number I have seen driving around in the last few years of owning mine.

I also looked at getting an Evo, but the running costs are insane compared to the S2000!

Which one did you drive?

I don't think it matters, you either "get" Impreza's or you don't. I know I didn't. It was quick, don't get me wrong, but due to the fact that it had so much mechanical grip it felt utterly dull in such a way that you can't get any sense of speed or being "on edge" unless you drive it like someone who should be sectioned.

My opinions are based on my driving of a P1.

conanious....

not that the Mk5 GTI platform isn't the best (imho) FWD hot hatch.. I'm now looking at selling my Edition 30 with a view to going back to a S2k (most likely), Z4 roadster, 350z etc plus a sensible mondeo/vectra diesel.

Are you sure you want rid of the S2k? why not add a utility vehicle to the collection and have the best of both worlds?
