Just been driving 3 months, and this happens, totally Pooped my pants :p
Anyone shed some light on what might have happened?

Was driving home last night, thank god the road was dead apart from a few parked cars, doing about 40ish, hit one MASSIVE hole that went right across the road, then it sounded like a screw/bolt/something came off and rattled about and went away, then there was no controle of the wheels, i could turn the stearing whell like 12" or so either side before the car turned that way, so i slammed on the breaks and drifted sideways in the snow and missed a parked car my 1/2 inches from my side mirrors :o

Thing is i left the car there over night, picked it up this morning and its fine?
Stearing wheel not as responsive as it used to be but hardly noticable.

Any ideas? as am not jumping on the motorway till its fixed :(

My mate had this years ago and wasnt icy. Never found out what it was.

I would agree with Fireskull on this one.

Had this happen to me quite a few times turned out to be a broken steering rack. Car was fine to drive most of the time but now and again the steering would just lock up. Luckily only ever happened at low speeds for me

Cheers guys, think it will be fine till march when its mot is due? :)

I'm somewhat concerned by this, if you have any doubt about the steering (or brakes) on your car, get it checked out.

How anyone can have doubts about safety critical aspects of their car and then wonder if it'll be ok until the MOT in a few months time I have no idea...

Prolly snapped the slightly bendy bit of the column where the PAS sensor is, and the 12" either way is the safety stops in case that bit snaps.

I'll just echo what the other have said, it probably was ice, but you should get it checked out asap. The big hole followed by the noises you describe concerns me a little.
