If someone sends me a payment through PayPal by a 'gift payment', could they ever recover this back?

Asking because I'm selling an item online, and the guy said it's impossible to recover a gift payment back. Is this true?

Cheers

Why can't he just buy it via the auction? You're not going to be protected if you don't link the item to the payment. As lame as Paypal/eBay charges are - for purposes of fraud and peace of mind they're worth it.

The only exception I would probably make is someone turning up and paying in cash.

If someone pays by gift then the buyer is taking a risk as he can't file a claim or anything. As stated, the only way he can get money back is if he pays by credit card and then does a charge back through his CC. I'm unsure of how paypal will deal with his account in the future after this though, as it will be totally obvious he was sending as a gift to avoid fees.

I usually ask people on trusted forums (pretty much only here) to pay via gift but in the end it's the buyer's choice as to whether he/she wants to take the risk.

Is paypal gift still free for both parties as i've seen a few complaints about having a small charge added ?

Unless they was using a credit card payment.
