I'm looking to improve my French, so can anyone recommend some good French films to watch? I like all genres, really, as long as they are entertaining.

Already seen:

- Amélie
- La Haine
- A Very Long Engagement (Planning to re-watch this though)

Anything else that stands out? I did a bit of googling but I end up with a lot of 'old' French films that don't seem that fun to watch - I could be mistaken and will give them a try if some OCUKers recommend them :)

Tell No One - Many find the twisting plot too convoluted and confusing, which I don't necessarily disagree with, but it's worth the watch for the romance side of it.
13 Tzameti - Extremely intense film. This will have you on the edge of your seat, your eyes glued to the screen and biting your nails. All at the same time.
Paris, je t'aime

One "old" French film is worth watching: "Les Diaboliques". Not to be confused with the awful Sharon Stone remake.

This. Absolutely exceptional. Watch it in HD and enjoy the superb cinematography.

For dazzling visuals and some good old fashioned escapism: Banlieue 13 & Banlieue 13 - Ultimatum.

Hope you enjoy these:

Jean de Florette & Manon Des Sources
La Reine Margot
Cyrano de Bergerac
The Return of Martin Guerre
Belle de Jour
Jules et Jim
The Three Colors Trilogy
The Double Life of Veronique
Betty Blue
Les Visiteurs
La Cage Aux Folles
Rififi
Lacombe Lucien

Absolutely fantastic film but just so apeZ is under no illusions it is worth pointing out there is a 30 minute sequence where no character speaks - it manages to convey more emotion and tension in that period that most blockbusters manage in their entire running time but it's not a film you can watch without concentrating.

Dobermann and District 13 are another couple of French films worth watching, very different styles though and for sheer comedy the Taxi series is good, they go in the usual order for trilogies in terms of quality.

BBC 4 had a great French cop series called 'Spiral' and 'Spiral 2' which were very good. Well worth hunting down

If you like horror then the french have made 4 of the best horror movies of the last 5 years...in no real order, Switchblade Romance (Haute Tension), Inside, Frontiers and Martyrs, the latter being the single best horror movie i've ever watched and a one of a kind experience.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Will try and pick up a few.

r some english films with french dubbing/subtitles would probably help you learn french :D:p

haha, fair point but I want FRENCH films because it helps me to understand the culture and history better - if I want to watch English films, I'll watch them in English :)

The female lawyer was a sleazy as a someone who went into politics because they were too bent to be an estate agent - but I still would.

There was a thread about foreign films a few weeks back that had some good recommendations but I can't seem to find it. Anyway, François Ozon is a fairly safe bet when it comes to French films, imo. Swimming Pool, 8 femmes, Sous le sable, Gouttes d'eau sur pierres brûlantes and Sitcom are all worth a watch. I recommend you start with the ones in bold.
