New car (That doesnt cost 25k)

A Golf GTi is a perfectly good car, but it's a complete backwards step from an S2000 is what we're getting at.

Correct. Whilst I'd never actually suggest a Golf GTI to anyone, I can see it's plus sides, I just don't think it offers anything over say the 330ci for it to be justifiable when coming from an S2000, or any other car with decent driving dynamics (assuming the driver likes cars of this ilk).

It just appears that you are compromising too much, or are being forced into this decision by an external factor that you are unwilling to give us insight of. A whole world of cars could be yours for 7-8K that fill your need for more practicality whilst also offering up a good dollop of driving dynamics. Something a Golf GTi never will.

I hand on heart say this as the owner of a very comparable DULL FWD 265BHP hatchback, I can also hand on heart say that I'd NEVER buy another. This isn't a hatred of FWD, more a dislike for performance FWD. If you want a Golf, get a cheap one, if you want performance... don't get a Golf.

You'll get the Golf, then about a month later go for a drive and think 'Why did I spend thousands of pounds to get this car?'

Fair enough. Maybe I need to more clearly articulate my requirement

I'm after a new car. I fancy a change from the s2000. Having a laugh is still a must, and the car will still see track action on a couple of occasions each year. I want/need at least 2+2 seating, and want better bootspace than my s2000. Ideally I would like to be able to fit enough stuff to get away for a week in the car. For the right car I think I'd go up to price to change of 5k. Age isn't an issue but running costs are. My s2000. Whilst it has been treated to the best mods and maindealer servicing hasn't been a cheap car to run. It would be good to therefore lower these costs if possible. I quite fancy something forced induction, but would consider n/a.

This couldn't suggest a 330Ci any harder unless you had posted 330CI instead of every punctuation mark.

Please just go and try a 330ci, properly. I bet you'll like it - it's a bit more grown up than your S2000 but also a bit more practical and not too expensive to run.

At least you can fold the seats down in a Golf so you can fit your humongous bag of WTF in it :D

RX8? A golf GTi would certainly be a step backwards, way further back than it sounds like you are intending to go.

RX8 is an awful suggestion. The fuel/oil consumption alone would put it outside of his not wanting an expensive car to run. Let alone the dubious reliability as it becomes higher mileage (engine rebuild etc).

That would explain why they have devalued so much so quickly, they seem to be a lot of car for the money at the bottom end of the market.

I still think it should be considered, maybe go less on the purchase price to make up for the reliability and maintenance?

How was the S2000 expensive to run? Putting a brand new roof on cause it had a few splits is hardly a 'running' cost.

Bear one thing in mind guys, sometimes, for whatever illogical reason, people aren't always looking to upgrade or make any particular kind of improvement on what they have, sometimes it's nice just to have a change, to try something different for a while. I get the impression that is really what Conanius is after here. I say fine, go for it, I wouldn't suggest a Golf is necessarily a great idea, but, if you liked it and the price is right why the hell not ? ...the Golf is a pretty decent car after all, the GTI especially is very well thought of.

I would certainly strongly suggest you look at the 330CI aswell though, it is a better car really, but of course you will have to get an older one.

I know what it's like to not quite have a particular 'type' of car in mind sometimes, and just want something different to what you have, offten leading to all sorts of quite different cars. I started my last car search looking at stuff like the BMW Z4 (and the S2000, although I have slated it's engine to hell before, still don't like it either), hell I came awfully and horribly close to buying a Porsche Boxster I couldn't 'really' afford ...in the end though, I bought a 17ft long Jag with an engine and autobox so lazy they'd have been put on report at British Leyland, but I must say, I do rather like it :D

Do I need it? ...nahhh, does it kill the planet? ...yep, probably, do I care? ..nope.
Totally different from what I had before or what I talked about getting. Mind you, I've never hidden my love of big automatic saloon cars, I just never actually thought I'd buy one, at least not this side of 30.

Point is, buy whatever the heck you like, if you can afford it and you fancy in, go for it, whatever kind of slating you get on here, and I know I’ve dished some out in the past myself (although that is for genuinely horrific purchases usually, like the £11k Fiesta on Finance that was about 5 years old etc) ..at the end of the day it is your car, your money and it’s about you.

So how about a 2004 XKR 4.2 Supercharged ? :D

Buy it now, does what you need and good foundations for track fun.

I can see the appeal of a Golf GTi, I'd take one over the Mini for sure (and did) and liked the one my wife had and found it a very practical and fun little car. It was not very quick but was nippy and always put a smile on my face. I live in the countryside and enjoyed driving it cross country but not sure it would be S2000 quick but still fun.

Don't see the issue with the Golf to be honest? A friend has just sold his 3.0 Z4 for an ED30 for similar reasons to Conanius and when I had a go I could see the appeal. Ok, the steering felt a little numb, and it had 300bhp but it was such a laugh to drive! The DSG box was fantastic, could be chucked about and it was making some nice sounds while still being comfortable and solid inside.

I switched my S2K for my Ed30 and I'm now looking to go back :)
I've kept the Ed30 for almost 2yrs and thats a record in my car history :D
