The number of burglaries has plunged by more than 35 per cent, there has been a 25 per cent drop in the number of assaults and the number of people caught stealing cars has fallen by seven per cent in the past year.

Bet the liberal skum like Shami Chakrabarti will never let this happen on the mainland.

and you can make a similar outcome with the price of gold or anything else. What else has happened to reduce crime rate.
Seeing as punishment rarely affects crime rates. Then this is almsot certainly not linked.

I quite like the idea. Drugs are still an issue in prisions though. There were ideas of jamming mobile phones as well which I also approve of.

Why is it they have TV's etc in there cell's? It is almost like a cheap travel lodge in there.

Hardly punishment.

That shouldn't be it's main aim.

It's main aim should be protecting the public, closely followed by rehabilitation. I also think such things should be removed but for slightly different reasons. It should be a place to work hard and get education or training if you wish and if you don't want to do that a decent 8+ hour day doing work. Maybe it would get them use to it for when they leave.

Prove to me that this is a causal correlation and not simply a casual one.

Another underhanded swipe at the liberal philosophy? Grow up.

Because can you honestly see people voting for the politician that says

"we're going to remover all luxuries from prison!!"

...

"And you're going to have foot the massive increase in costs, so we'll be raising income tax a bit."

Although it may make the wardens and guards jobs harder with regards to unrest, I feel that the prisoners should surely be helped into a 8 hour working day pattern with encouragement outside of 'work' time to then read and study. This would surely be the best goal for rehabilitation into the norm that we would like them to part take in?

So removal of TV would benefit by removing the distraction it provides and either allow them to better themselves or think about the things they have done and perhaps give them drive to not repeat? Simplistic view I know, but still don't approve of TV for them.

But prison is not about luxuries is it?

Prison is punishment is it not, It should be 4 walls and a door imo not "Richard and Judy eveyday and sewing club at 2:)

You're right it's not about luxuries, but no one wants to pay the large hike in costs to remove them.

It costs less to keep the prisoners entertained and peaceful through bribes than it does through hiring more guards and paying them more and buying more equipment to control la bored and aggressive prison population.

SO would you vote for somone who said they'd remove luxuries from prison if it ment you'd have to either pay more tax or take money from the NHS etc?

my thoughts on the dot.

was discussing this earlier with collegues, if I were homeless/had nothing to my name, it would be tem[pting to commit a crime, to go to prison, just to get free accomodation, free meals, games consoles, tv, and basically an easy life
