James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

I genuinely can't see a possible rip-off between Avatar and The Matrix

Are you just trying to be difficult

I'm referring to the similarity that they both have to enter the matrix/pandora through the use of some kind of a machine which transfers them to different locations and their characters take on a different persona.

Awesome film.

Saw it with some friends a couple of days ago and we all really enjoyed it.

Should hopefuly be going to see it again tonight with my sister and her husband.

I don't see the link between Matrix & Avatar either....

Hmmm... Sort of... Yes and no... Main difference is that the persona's are virtual in a computer program or real physical bodies in a real world...

I can't see where this "rip off" of the Matrix comes from to be honest - the film does involve the use of remotely controlled "avatars" but that's where any similarity (if it even exists) ends!

Would love to go and see this again :D

Am just wondering how many hours of special extras there will be on the Bluray release :o

Watching this tonight...not at the imax though...cant wait as ive heard some pretty good things about it.

saw it at the new imax in the metro centre the other day jono, was pretty damn awesome :P definately worth seeing it at an imax cinema rather than a normal one as the effects were spectacular :D oooh btw the new odeon at the metro centres pretty cool, even has a sushi bar just outside hehe  om nom nom

EDIT: ohh btw we had to prebook a day in advance and the que's were huge :\

I wouldn't mind an extended cut as at least at home I can pause it to take breaks - I don't think I could sit through it in one go if it was upto 180 odd minutes long!

I enjoyed the special extras they had on the Star Trek discs so wouldn't mind something similar for this.

I read on IMDb that James Cameron took the cast through some actual jungle to get them used to the kind of place they'd be "acting in" when doing the voice-overs and Zoe Saldana actually wore a tail to really try and get inside her character so would be interesting to see some footage of that adventure!

or perhaps I can't see it because you're being ridiculous.

Avatar is a physical body that is entered through a link up thing, Pandora is a physical place that they enter as humans as well

The Matrix is a computer program that they hack into and have no physical presence.

Honestly it's basically like you saying 300 ripped off Lord Of The Rings because they both fight with swords.

I saw Avatar at the Imax in London, was really really good to watch.

I enjoyed the film, but the storyline wasn't that good. It was a bit cliched.
Still great to watch!

You can do full 3D without glasses, using lenticular displays - but they tend to have a limited number of viewing angles so some consideration there would be required - and again, they can cause headaches after a time :)

I don't get your antics? From the outset you've seemed to have been on some mission to bash this film?
- You quote speak as if you've seen it - when you haven't.
- You generalise and quote people out of context.
- And quote people who solely allow you to have another little dig, when probably their opinion are the exception?

When have I ever spoken as if I'd seen it? Nowhere that I can recall. (Of course, I could get the whole plot from Wikipedia if I wanted to pretend I'd seen it). Yes I generalise (who doesn't?) but when did I quote anyone out of context? Of course I am going to quote people who didn't like the plot, since this is part of the point I am making.

Anyway, I don't know what your problem is... Do you?

I don't have a problem. I take exception to drooling fanbois who think that a bad movie with good visuals is a good movie, but that's another issue.

Are you kidding me? You were dishing out indepth critique before it was even on the screens?

In fact, there is no need to mention the subtext because it's so blatantly on show that it's no longer subtext.

Cameron has lost the subtlety he displayed to such great effect in The Abyss and Aliens.

You were even throwing out ratings, on behalf of other people, 5/10?

Yes the plot/script is weak, but there's something more to it than that. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it considering how poor it was.

Ahhh! So it's a "bad movie"? Have you seen it?

Do you think I'm a drooling fanboy? And anyone else who suggests they really enjoyed the experience?

Here's a wild and wacky suggestion - which I've put forward a number of times - watch it... Then comment? Crazy I know...

Watched it in 3D and was really impressed with the visuals. Had no problem with viewing angles and there was always something floating around in the foreground!

Unfortunatly as many of the reviews have pointed out the story is not great and was made to be a family film imo ala titanic when it could have been a worthy successor to aliens. I think when 3D becomes more mainstream it is not going to be remembered as a great.

I enjoyed this film, found it very good, well acted, decent script and looked beautiful.

At one stage I even thought the Aliens were actually going to win... which shocked me at that stage of development.
I think this will pave the way for lots of films made to be made in 3D.

Ive got an awsome day planned saturday.

I finish work at 12 and its traight onto the M6 with some mates to watch stoke vs Villa. Then we will mill about a bit and finaly go see avatar at the IMAX while we have the chance. Unfortunately its a later 11.30 showing.

we live in stoke so the best cinema we have is a standard vue cinema. None of us have seen a 3D movie or even an imax.

Is the above imax fairy decent? Tickets already booked at £9 each

Although this post is a little late, if you have not seen it in IMAX 3D, then I would definately recommened the IMAX 3D in Odeon Manchester (being only an hour drive from stoke).

Much bigger than any other UK IMAX screen measuring 23 metres by 29 metres (yes, even bigger than the BFI IMAX in waterloo, London which is only 20 metres by 26 metres).

*spoiler*

I am absolutely blown away by how visually spectacular it was. However, I think the film would be better if it stopped after the tree blew up. After that, Michael Bay seemed to start directing...

Regardless, I'm happy to forgive the cliched and bombastic finale simply because it was primarily a family film and as a result the plot progression was suitable. The bit I enjoyed the most was more the emotional build-up between the two main characters. When things started getting 'intense', I was reminded I was watching a film and was sucked back out of the world I was immersed in.

Still, an absolute beast of a film. Just fantastic.

And the 3D!!! Good grief, it was simply mindblowing. The three things to look out for:

The water sequence
The visual displays in the control room
Marks / smears on glass throughout the film

Unbelievably good.

Hmm interesting. I've seen it twice now (once on my own, and once with the family), but haven't been in an IMAX yet. I'm thinking of doing that towards the end of next month.

Not at all, I completely understand where Gustov is coming from.

In both films, what was the reality and which was the dream / nightmare? And which was better? I think this was a issue that characters in both films had to deal with, with a conflict of identities.
