British man to be exectuted by Chinese

You are entitled to your opinions and attempt at humour, however laughing at someone who genuinely wishes peace for an executed man is stepping over the mark.

RIP to a convicted drug smuggler though? I wish him no peace whatsover. Just glad he's off this earth.

So requesting China not to murder someone because it's a totally backwards barbaric practice is arrogant

Yes, it is arrogant. Who the hell are we to tell another government how govern their country? We need to get our own stinking toilet of a country in order before we go off pontificating to another!

I think you'll find most of us always say it is totally wrong whenever it comes up in posts.

it is totally wrong and barbaric and serves no purpose.

To show you mean what you say don't buy anything made in china from now on
Or are you going to be like the rest of them and come on the net and moan about it but do nothing?

The ignorance in here is akin to the Daily Mail comments section.

Firstly, he was executed for drug trafficking. Their argument that the amount of cocaine he brought in "could" have murdered thousands of Chinese citizens is illogical and utterly outrageous.

Secondly, this case highlights and illustrates the major flaw in the death penalty. You simply cannot be sure whether or not somebody is guilty in many cases and putting them down is barbaric and has no place whatsoever in a civilised, developed world.

I can't see how anyone can support this. If we think of a similar example. If you travelled to China and somebody hid some Cocaine in your bag, if you were found to be carrying it you would be executed. Hardly fair.

China you have committed an atrocity.

Why would China even listen to us lol:

You're making several leaps of logic in getting from AH2 decrying the death penalty to expecting him to boycott Chinese goods.

Briton's execution condemned by PM

Akmal Shaikh, 53, was put to death after losing a final appeal last week against his conviction for smuggling heroin.

His execution sparked outrage among campaigners who said he was mentally ill and had been suffering from delusions when he was arrested in Urumqi, north west China, in September 2007.

In a statement, Mr Brown said he was "appalled" and "disappointed" by the execution and offered his condolences to the Shaikh family.

He said: "I condemn the execution of Akmal Shaikh in the strongest terms, and am appalled and disappointed that our persistent requests for clemency have not been granted. I am particularly concerned that no mental health assessment was undertaken.

"At this time our thoughts are with Mr Shaikh's family and friends and I send them our sincere condolences."

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said: "I condemn in the strongest terms the execution of the British national Akmal Shaikh. I join the Prime Minister in expressing my deepest condolences to Mr Shaikh's family and friends.

"The UK is completely opposed to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances. However I also deeply regret the fact that our specific concerns about the individual in this case were not taken into consideration despite repeated calls by the Prime Minister, ministerial colleagues and me. These included mental health issues, and inadequate professional interpretation during the trial."

Campaigners and witnesses who contacted the human rights group Reprieve said Shaikh, from Kentish Town, north London, suffered from bipolar disorder and could not have been responsible for his actions when he was arrested with 4kg of heroin.

According to Reprieve, Shaikh was executed at 10.30am local time (2.30am GMT), although it is not yet known how the death sentence was carried out.

Its not the size that counts ;-)

Well, I was wrong and they did it. Very sad in this day and age. What is worse that due his religion his body will not be repatriated and will be buried with 24hrs and his family will have no final resting place to visit.

It is a little bit scary because I am sure that 10 years ago this would not have happened as China would have backed down to the UK's demands. Now they simply say no.

They don't but they have sent out a message to us, you now know what happens if you get caught and we mean it.
Yeah, that they uphold their own Laws and don't give a s*** about other countries meddling in their affairs.

Whether you're against capital punishment or not it's their country, their laws, their justice system. Don't commit crimes "worthy" of capital punishment in countries that have the death penalty?

Gonna start whining about Saudis chopping off peoples hands for theft? That's as "backward" as capital punishment is. At the end of the day it's none of our business what China does with its criminals, you can't crow about their backward practices and in the very same breath talk about immigrants coming here having to follow our laws and customs.

I'm sorry but if your stupid enough to smuggle drugs you get wants coming to you.

Have you missed the part where he may be mentally ill and that he was duped by other people to carry the suit case.

They did not do any medical tests and we have no idea if it was even a fare trial, as they are surrounded by secrecy.

Gonna start whining about Saudis chopping off peoples hands for theft?

Just read other threads and you will see many people moaning about said law.

Yes we have to except their law, it doesn't mean we can't moan about a disgusting practice, especially with their secrecy and lack of medical testing around the trial.

Problem is that we bend backwards to accommodate their customs etc and are afraid we upset them. Out laws and customs are very often ignored by immigrants coming to this country.

This is not a racists comment just one that states we do not have a level playing field.

I mean our Christmas light ceremony was renamed Winter Light Night for Pete's sake!!

Here's what I don't get.....

If he was "mentally ill" then how come apparently he had no previous medical record of this fact?

If he was "tricked" into smuggling then who was he supposed to give the drugs to at the other end? Are we supposed to believe he would just get home to find 4kg of drugs randomly in his luggage? What did he think he was due to be paid massive sums of money for, doing a song and dance?

Bottom line as far as I'm concerned is that this guy knew the risks were high and the rewards even higher and took a gamble which didn't pay off. He did it in a country with the death penalty for smuggling drugs. I really don't see how he deserves clemency any more than any other random person who gets caught breaking a law in a foreign country.

You mean some middle aged married white woman who has taken PC to heart and is an idiot. Those are the people implementing these rules, not the immigrants.

why are you assuming there wasn't anyone a the other end or a drop off point
If you believe the family it wasn't money it was to become a pop star.

As a Christian, I'm offended by your conflating a festival of winter lights with one celebrating the birth of my Lord and Saviour.

In other words - don't whine about Christmas being renamed, when the celebrations in question really have nothing to do with the name you apparently hold so dear.

Exactly.

I'm of the opinion that people who visit foreign lands should respect and adhere to their laws & customs - whether that be people coming here or us going to China. I don't think it's fair to martyr this guy and at the same time moan about "dem immigrants" not following our customs, eroding them or whatever.
