Got a call from parents today. Their house got done last night - WHILST THEY WERE ASLEEP. There is no sign of forced entry anywhere so they can't work out how they got in. They have the keys to everything and stole the expensive 09 plate Merc (not sure what type but it's nice), 2 laptops, iPhone and not sure what else yet. They have the keys to the house and another car plus two motorbikes in the garage, but these have not been stolen which is even more worrying for them....

The only coincidental thing I can think of...they had their whole house double glazed a few weeks ago. Dodge?

Hardily the best source but having watched an episode of 'the real hustle' (i think it was this) where this (or similar) happened, it's perfectly plausible, all it would take is a tradesman who's a bit dodgey and an unguarded set of keys and that'd be it.

what ever happened it seems obvious that the keys have been copied, lock change time for anything left with a key it would seem :(.

house alarm ?
get a decent one where you can set it for different parts of the house.
so when they sleep they can have the downstairs secure(or atleast know if an intruder were to enter).

Heres a thought.

If the iPhone had the latest software on it you can track where it is on Google maps, assuming its on...

Keep an eye out for your stuff on ebay in the coming days, there was a story in the paper this morning about some chap who found all his stolen kitchen items on ebay 10 miles down the road from where he lived....

Does the expensive 09 plate Merc have a tracker on it ?

Is it possible the house was left insecure ? Unlocked window or door ?

They got in somehow and if it was without damage or force with a visible point of entry then they got in via an insecure opening, with keys or with a means of picking a lock.

I'm sure I am teaching how to suck eggs here but if it has't been done yet I would be changing every door lock in the house.

The house could have been alarmed, but assuming it was one of the double-glazing fitters, they could have easily seen the alarm code entered at some point or even given it so they could lock up or whatever. Also, with some alarms you just turn a key to turn it off [and too many people leave the key in it!] so if they had a front door key, they could have walked in and turned it off.

I would suggest in future valuables be left in bedrooms when not in use, and lock the doors. I saw a program a while ago that said burglars tend to avoid trying to open a locked door as it would likely draw too much attention. They tend to grab what they can and do one.

Someone will of seen the "expensive" merc outside and thought it would be a good target. I bet they will be back when everything is replaced by insurance too, my neighbour when i lived with my parents got done 3 times within 1.5yrs

Change all the locks right away. And also get an alarm ASAP. They will most likely come back for the things they got keys for at some point. My friend had their house burgled 3 times within a year, since all they do is come back after you have replaced everything with insurance...

I would be terrified if I knew someone had been in my house while I was sleeping, noticing nothing :/ Wouldn't be able to sleep after that.

A few years ago my student house was done over, the day after my gf had an ann summers party.

The party held by the same rep previously was done over 2 days after.

They got in through the small upstairs bathroom window (broken i.e. would not lock).

LE3 - the second highest burglary rate in the uk \o/
