The village of Wootton Basset in Wiltshire

I agree with the sentiment, but the name is so crashingly awful that there's no way I will sign the petition. Think up a better name that makes the same point and then I'm on board.

M

+1, it sounds almost gimmicky.

i work in wootton bassett :) often see the hearses coming through

And again right now. Am I the only one who finds it all a bit morbid and wallowing in self pity? The entire town coming to a standstill for hours? I think it is well over the top. Oh well.

I didnt want to be the first to say but I am inclined to agree now, at first it was a nice sign of respect but now its getting a little tiring, blocks up the high street for hours, I know I probably sound a bit heartless! but they chose to do the job, why should they get any more praise than a police officer or fireman or anyone who died on the job

Exactly. I find it a bit disturbing to hero worship your military, but I'm afraid they aren't any better than me or any other profession.

Has it taken you 10 months to come to this conclusion.

will definitely sign when home, for once a petition that actually means something more than people moaning.

Truly a just cause

A sign of respect is one thing, putting their town on the map so everyone knows about how respectful they are, is not respectful. Likewise ask a soldier over in Afghanistan now if they'd feel happier if when they die they get driven on a road called highway of heroes and they'd laugh at you and probably mention they are dead, and seeing as millions of other people use the road, its a completely pointless gesture.

Honestly it sounds more like a tourist move by the town mayor, or whoevers in charge up there, than a sign of respect, which is such a disgustingly selfish and greedy move that I wouldn't ever sign that petition. It screams of them wanting a town known to be there, on this famously named road and they want to make money out of it.

Respect for the dead is one thing, running around telling everyone about how you're more respectful than anyone else just turns it into a joke.

How about we have a petition that every single last person in the country signs that asks the people we vote to run the country for us, to get the **** out of Afghanistan, that I'd sign, it wouldn't force Labours hand in any way, but will probably push the other parties to all promise to pull out if they get in power, which isn't a bad thing. I really don't know why the other parties aren't pushing it in the same deluded way Obama did. We'll stop getting involved in entirely pointless wars and pull out of any we are currently in = labour losing.

EDIT:- pointless seeing as I only just realise how old this was, why drag up such a stupidly old thread?

I'm not a resident of Wooton Basset but I live pretty close and shop there occasionally, I was there giving blood last week actually.

I sort of agree with you. On the one hand there's a genuine turnout of support there, lots of old soldiers etc and people who want to show their support - and for that I thank and commend them.

However it's starting to look like occupational mourning, like after Lady Di died people tried to out-do each other and show they were grieving more than anyone else. Another example is people who give to charity, purely so they can brag about how much work they do for charity so they can appear to be 'better people'.

It's a tough one, I like the idea of supporting fallen heroes in some way - but I think they are starting to take the whole thing a little far. If it was me or a member of my family, I'd rather not have the attention and strangers grieving for me, but that's just me.

My preference would be to support one of the charities for fallen servicemen, which I do but obviously won't elaborate on. :)

I thought it was better to post in an existing thread rather than needlessly start a new one. And a glance at the news today will reveal that the issue is still very much current.
