I installed my eibach springs then 6 months later the shocks have given up

when i hit a bump the suspension bottoms out so it proper knacked

I thought ST front shock absorbers would be a better choice and the local parts dealer will have some in stock

i thought I'd ask here first so i don't look like a plonker when I'm trying to fit the wrong part to my car :D:D

i would but cash is tight and st170 is lower and stiffer and don't cost much more than 1.8 ones

and the old shocks have probably done 45K before i got the car 3 years ago

im just trying to make the most of the limited cash i have :(

cheers for the reply berger il look for some Bilsteins without springs last time i looked they try to sell you the springs aswell

i had converted my old fiesta with a 2.0 focus engine in it and had Bilstein all round was rearly good for a xr2i :)

The way I see it you have the option of fitting ST170 shocks and springs, or aftermarket shocks and springs sold to work together.

Not someone on ffoc or something who has upgraded his ST170 who might sell a used set cheap?

Bilstein Front B6 shocks for Mk1 Ford Focus £274.99 +£10.00 postage :O

yeah i went to ffoc but most of the site you have to pay £20 to see/post on it

Why not try some proper shocks rated for use with lowered springs ;)
There's conflicting information all over the place, but when I was sourcing new shocks for my 1.8 I found that the shocks are exactly the same for the 1.8, 2.0 and ST170, just with different part numbers and prices. The only difference between models is that shocks for a Zetec are slightly stiffer than for that of a LX, Ghia, etc.

So technically the shocks should be rated for lowered springs, given that the ST170 sits on lower springs as standard.

I wouldn't have thought the ST170 setup would work on the 1.8 due to the lower weight of the front end? And it would be pointless fitting ST170 shocks to the front only - especially given that it will sit higher than the rear, even without the weight difference on the front.

Viper; just get a pair of new Ford shocks or a set of Bilstein shocks from ECP. Standard shocks and Eibach springs are perfectly fine and there are plenty of people running that setup.

Just as a comparison, the official Ford prices and FINIS codes for shocks to fit your car are as follows:

RH 1202248 @ £53.05 inc vat

LH 1202648 @ £53.05 inc vat

I'd go with the Bilstein's, but you might prefer to stick with Ford OEM.

it has the eibach springs all already the front right shock gave up probably half dead when i put the springs on 2 years ago

i have now orderd new Bilstein shocks for the fronm the site mentioned above + free delivery is a bonus

i have been out of work for 12 months so not easy geting the car ready for mot :(

i wouldnt mind knowing how you get hold of ford prices :)

drop me an email in my sig :D

also after placing the order i find they have a shop just in town lol

i suspect that the delivery will come in there own van

i thought eibach springs were OK to use with standard shocks?

Your shocks were probabally pretty much dead.

They are supposed to be okay for standard dampers but can bottom out if you hit a big enough bump, which doesn't do them much good. Can't help but think that if the damper has already bedded in with standard springs that dropping the height further can't be too good for it. Uprated dampers matched to the springs has to be the best option, albeit more expensive.
