Seagull sunset...

I can add to this thread as I have the exact things mentioned in the title together! ;)

Ta :) It's the Sigma 70-200 f2.8, I was testing out the servo focus. I need to test it out on a tripod as I'm not convinced I've got the sharpest lens, it's pretty soft really :(

Cheers all, I'm tempted to use the first one as my comp entry. I'm that desperate to get a decent shot I even took my camera shopping today! :D

How do you rate the auto focus speed of the sigma HSM? Is it comparable to canons USM?

I don't know, I haven't used the canon! I might hire out the canon 70-200 f2.8 IS to have a look see. Realistically I can't afford one (hence the Sigma) but at least I'd know what I was missing!

Doesn't really do much for me I'm afraid, so I rarely bother with it. I have done other crops of these though. I'll stick them up when I get back to my comp, if I remember.

I dont mind the pictures, theyre sharp, theyre clear, nicely coloured. But the do nothing for me

But having the subject in the rule of thirds makes a big difference

Fair do's each to their own :) Personally I don't see how losing part of picture to adhere to a "rule" improves anything really. In the case of these anyway. Certainly I have done it to other pictures to make them more interesting, but in the case of a solitary item\background, meh

I did do other crops of these but only uploaded one:

edit: I'm uploading another which I preferred over his one. I aim to please :) I would actually be quite interested in seeing any crops you feel do improve the picture as I'm always willing to learn new tricks if need be!
edit2: This is the other:

I'm guessing he was using the centre AF point (the only cross-type on XXXD cameras), it's just the best way of tracking something that moves, especially if it's fast and unpredictable.

Spot on, using servo assist as well. It's pretty quick this Sigma, I'll be testing it at the Rugby Saturday :)

these ones are better. i prefer the 2nd image. try and do a wide crop on this rather then square, i think it would give it a much better feel to the picture :)
