On the road....
I just went out to my car to de-ice it prior to taking my daughter home later and turned the key, nothing, zilch not a click!

Cursing, I trudged back inside to find my toolkit assuming the battery terminal was possibly loose (its not) etc only to find this time the ignition lights etc came on and it fired first turn of the key as per normal.

I've checked the battery terminals, earth etc and everything seems fine!

Possible problem with my ignition switch perhaps? - I'd rather get to the bottom of this before it decides to do this again prior to me going to work for example.

Any suggestions (helpful or not!) welcome! :)

1996 BMW e36 328i Auto.

motors forum perhaps

Oh **** Sorry, Dons, do your stuff please! :o:o:o

Edit: Thanks!

Edit:2

Lots of views, no reply's - I take it I've answered my own question (ignition switch) - next question, how do I check it bar replacement with a known good one?

What Bmw have you got?
I know my E46 did that, you had to take the barrel apart and clean it to fix it or just turn the key slowly seemed to help as well.

Blast it with brake cleaner? (I have some somewhere!)

Failing key barrel is quite common on the e36.

Never had a problem with my previous 318i (e36) - I've tried it a few times since and the problem has not (yet) happened again.

perhaps it was feeling the cold? :D

Mine does similar when its very cold, the immobiliser relay in the centre console doesnt click. Wait for it to warm up, hear the click then it starts. i might put some laggon on it or knit it a little jumper.

Not noticed any "click" previously, I'll have a listen when i go out to it in a bit....

Not all have EWS, I have a 97 328 that doesn't have it. Have you got the 16 button obc or are there more buttons? Anyway, if the EWS goes faulty, it causes this but I don't think its intermittent like you have described, so I'm more inclined to believe its the relay.

Its got the 18 Button OBC, its not done it again thus far, and no audible click when i turn on the ignition, so hopefully I'm in the clear there....

I don't know but could a faulty park/neutral inhibit switch cause this behaviour?

Perhaps mate,a duff switch in itself can cut the starter certainly. Normally though, I'd have ignition lights etc on regardless of the position of the gearlever, when this happened, it was in park and the car seemed totally dead. Come to think about it, the interior lights did not come on either....

I had that with my 535. It was a duff battery that died a few weeks later.
