Please help me. My girlfriend is annoying me.

She is looking to buy a 37" TV and has about a grand to spend. She only really watches freeview but wants it to be as good quality as possible. Her father has the SONY 40Z550 which I personally think looks superb but she doesn't like how the black isn't quite black enough. I know nothing about TVs so I just did a search for 37" TVs that receive good reviews and came up with the KDL-37W5500. Does anyone know if it's likely to be black enough or is she going to hate me if she buys it and finds that the black isn't to her satisfaction?

Does anyone have any alternative ideas for a decent quality 37" TV that is going to be nice and black for her?

I wouldn't go for the C10. The X10 is the one you want if you want to spend about £450. The best 37" screens out there for the money. I don't know how it would stack up against a tonnes worth though.

Can you get 37" Pioneers?

Can you/she stretch to a 42 panasonic? A 37 will be more towards the £500 area, so get something bigger, tvs always shrink with age as you become used to them :D

Stretch to 42" and get the Panny 42G10 tbh, has Freesat built in aswell - under 1k.

can be picked up for around £700-800 with 5 year warranty. Just got one myself and if she can fit the 42" where the TV needs to go it's a great buy for the money!

For that money a 42" Plasma (Panasonic) is ideal.

If you want decent blacks you will want a Plasma.

If you have to get 37" (which I did for our lounge) then it's the 37" Panasonic V10 LCD (it has better blacks than the 37" G10 LCD), but if you can convince the other half that 42" isn't too big for the room get the 42" Panasonic G10 Plasma - got one of those for elsewhere and it is a lovely screen.

42" Panasonic G10 is the way to go, looked at one today and they are very nice

42 might sound too big and even seem it at first but after a few days it will look ok :)

I can't speak for any of the local dimming LED-backlit LCDs, which seem to have reasonable blacks, but we bought an LG 32LF77 (LED backlight) for my girlfriend, and I have to say for £400 it's a damn good telly, and since she had sky, we just cancelled the contract and plugged her dish into the inbuilt HD Freesat decoder. My parents went out and bought one when they saw it. There are 37 and above sizes that would all fit into your budget.

With the latest firmware (which solves the much-complained-about backlight dimming lag) the contrast ratio looks good, and blacks are good for an LCD display. A purist will note that it's all a "trick" in that the TV adjusts the backlight to give good contrast, but it you just sit and enjoy a display for what it is, then it does the job.

Me personally, I've got nothing against LCD TV's, I have a perfectly adequate Philips in my bedroom, but I spent my Christmas overtime on a Panasonic 46" Plasma. If you're willing to take a bit of care about it's use, you get a lot of plasma for your money.

xxx currently have a very nice deal on a Sony 37" 1080P TV.

Usually sells for £900 and they've got it on sale for £480

Remove that competitor, not allowed on here :)

Also that set isn't worth £480, let alone £900. It's a low range sony with the V and W series being superior.
