Is my laptop dying horribly?

Hi all,

My laptop is a 3 1/2 year old Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi1546, the one with a x1800 mobility for very cheap (ha). Current problems:

1. A year and a half after I got it the graphics card died from heat, a very common occurance in this laptop, and ever since 3D has been a no-go. Its fine in 2D apps, surfing, HD videos etc etc but throw anything more intensive at it than Total Annihilation and it freezes. VPU recovery is also regular (where the card stops responding and is automatically reset to get it working again).

2. The DVD drive is temperamental now.

3. For some reason the laptop sometimes locks up for about 30 secs, during which the CPU seemingly cannot process anything, then will start working again and "catch up" after (eg if I am watching streamed media off internet or HDD the picture will freeze for about 30 secs, the sound will continue fine, and then the video will look like its fast forwarding until it catches up with the sound. if I am just surfing I can't do anything until after the 30 secs). This happens a few times a week.

4. Finally, sometimes if it gets warm when sitting on my lap or whatever, RGB spots flash randomly over the screen, not many but a few. They go away if I turn it off and let it cool down.

So is it dying? Would replacement be wise? I am asking as I am currently wrestling with whether to get a netbook (cheaper and more portability = HP mini 311) or laptop (more capable but more expensive = Acer 5739G) with my Christmas money. Netbook will mean having to continue to use this Amilo mainly, but the netbook will be very handy for uni.

Graphics chip is banjaxed. You can't fix it without a replacement logic board so either put up with it or replace the machine.

I wouldn't go Netbook, get a decent Intel dual core 13" laptop to combine portability and power.

Thats exactly what I have just discovered existed, my thanks my good man!!

The Inspiron 13z is making my jaw drop in terms of being the perfect balance...so tempted. With the 8 cell battery...

8 cell upgrade is well worth it. The latest Lenovo ultra-portables we're getting in at work last 8+ hours on a 9 cell battery, and they're still only 1.6kg.

I think its already been baked!! Its a common occurrence with that laptop model, the GPU was underclocked when you got it which is never a good sign!

Def going for a 13" badboy now

9-cells? then you must be getting X200's or X200s's? i've got one :D

you've a very generous employer!

Yep X200's. Cracking machines, I'd have one in a heartbeat if I wasn't a Mac user.

Most users get a choice of the T400 as well, but it's a brick in comparison. I've got an old T60 and won't be upgrading it for a T400 until they prise it out of my cold dead hands.

Hehehe, I've still got my IBM T41 workin' like a champ as a server/download box/media machine :D

I love my X200 though... what a machine. I think I love it more than my girlfriend!

It's also my 4th thinkpad :D

By baked he means the method of putting it in the oven to temporarily revive the card, as it reflows the solder joints.
Plenty of guides around on it.
You're slightly lucky, that machine uses an MXM card, so if you can find a replacement, you dont need to replace the machine/motherboard, just the bad GPU.
IIRC that chassis was also used on the Alienware M5750 or something very similar, so there may even be a few card replacement guides around, I remember flashing the one I had to the AW bios once just to see if it opened up any additional options (it didnt so I went back to FS BIOS)

There's a site in the US selling these cards for $120 +shipping (so about £70-80+shipping), but I dont know how reliable they are:

<shouldnt count as a competitor!>

You should also be able to get a replacement slimline DVDRW drive reasonably cheaply.

Would also be worth taking the heatsink assembly off and completely reapplying thermal paste; after 3 1/2 years the crud FS used may well have gone dead!
