Packing in the the smokes

Cold turkey is actually bad for your health in a way.... Starving the brain of something its used to straight away.
My friend quit but cutting down on fags, quickly
Cut down like 1 less a day/week and you'll find your down to one a day in no time.
Affective way to quit...
x

My new years resolution was to quit, finding it very hard considering I have been smoking cannbis daily for around 7 months. Going to try and cut it out by smoking a few fags a day instead and then go from there to try and quit all together. Very hard to quit though when many of my friends are heavy smokers :(.

I am going to make an appointment with my doc soon as I want to cut down from 20 ish a day to 10 to start with and less after that. I hope I can get either pills or gum as I doubt they will give me patches if I still smoke a bit.

I did give up a £200 a week (for 5 years ish) cannabis habbit without too much bother other than sleeping but zopiclone and benzos helped with that and bad anxiety.

Damn dude £200 a week, I spent around £80 - £100 per week. I can also see my self having to get some sleeping tablets as I always find it very hard to sleep with out having a joint :(.

They're a lot cheaper than smoking though. I was buying some cold medicine today and the big boxes of nicotine gum on the shelf nearby were £8. 100 or so in those, and you don't get 100 cigarettes for £8.

Boots do lozenges 96 for about £10 and Sainsbuggers have 72 for £7. I would rather smoke than chew gum. I can't stand the stuff; it ends up everwhere making a mess and talking to people while they are chewing makes me think I'm some kind of farm vet.

I have stopped for a week now and doing ok. The nicotine lozenges are really helping as I am not getting a buzz out of smoking while I have been sucking a loz just before. I'm really just thinking there is no point in smoking as I don't need it.

I worried I am going to pick up a nicotine lozenge addiction though! I quit last time for 3 months and heaven only knows why I started again.

Cold Turkey. Hard at first but you are not subsituting one addiction for another, which makes for a much better chance of long-term success.

Worked for me, just over 9 years ago. Not had a smoke since and never will. I'm cured :)

Yeah I know the feeling, zopiclone are good for sleep.

Gentle reminder to those giving up (good luck by the way):)

Cigarette Chemicals (in Tobacco Smoke)

Benzene (petrol additive)
A colourless cyclic hydrocarbon obtained from coal and petroleum, used as a solvent in fuel and in chemical manufacture - and contained in cigarette smoke. It is a known carcinogen and is associated with leukaemia.
Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
A colourless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies - also found in cigarette smoke. Known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.
Ammonia (toilet cleaner)
Used as a flavouring, frees nicotine from tobacco turning it into a gas, found in dry cleaning fluids.
Acetone (nail polish remover)
Fragrant volatile liquid ketone, used as a solvent, for example, nail polish remover - found in cigarette smoke.
Tar
Particulate matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker's lungs.
Nicotine (insecticide/addictive drug)
One of the most addictive substances known to man, a powerful and fast-acting medical and non-medical poison. This is the chemical which causes addiction.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) (car exhaust fumes)
An odourless, tasteless and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts - it's the same gas that comes out of car exhausts and is the main gas in cigarette smoke, formed when the cigarette is lit. Others you may recognize are :
Arsenic (rat poison), Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)

good post, good information!

one thing though - lighted cigarette - shouldn't that be lit? or am I incorrect?

I've attempted to give up numerous times cold turkey, managed to give up through the NHS "Smoke free" Service using nicotine patches back in September and haven't picked up a cigarette since, the help is there and free. I don't see why you wouldn't use it :)

Yeah I know the feeling, zopiclone are good for sleep. That is probably what you'll get prescribed. Two oz a week I smoked I stopped due to immense paranoia thinking I would get killed etc, and thoughts in the third person and other bad stuff too. Im glad to be off it now though and my life is a lot better - I never used to leave my bedroom I was just on the PC all the time now I socialise and talk more than ever but I did turn to drink big time for a year but have cut down (not so much recently due to special occasions etc) but overall from 12 cans a day to 1 and half a home made beer no joke with help from a strong benzodiazepine (sp) med beginning with v. Please dont delete this thread as is it important and good.

Well done Spie for giving up the cigs!

Two oz a week is quite a lot to smoke in a week, I used to buy 1/4 oz every 2 - 3 days although it would have been more if I had proper job. Deffo understand what your saying though, I've been stuck in my room quite a lot recently just because I have not had the enegry and motivation to go out and socialize because all I've wanted to do is smoke.

2 oz a week? GET LOST, no way were you getting through that much. that's like 30 spliffs a day? lets say each one takes 5 mins to roll up that's 2 hours alone on rolling - it's just total BS. sorry - I have mates that cain about an oz a week and that's all day every day untuil the early hours. not leaving the house etc.

but yeah bs

how much do you want to bet mate?

It was more like 15-20 Js a day but I smoked King L skins most of the time not just 2 skins. It is no BS. I used to stay up all night smoking it till 9am then get up in the afternoon and carry on.

I must have put a fair bit in each J thats the only difference!! Its not exactly hard to smoke that much :S when u get a tollerance to its effects it doesnt even do that much but I could hallucinate in that the walls would shimmer im and out and objects would stand out from their background and music sounded much better than normal, with the amount I was getting through it was more like a trip than being stoned.

I have smoked two ounce in a day before, sometimes I put a whole 8th in a cigar blunt!!

I havent done much more than weed tbh and I have been through a serious psychosis (sp) envolving thoughts in the 3rd person, thinking my thoughts were broadcast to everyone in the world including everything I heard I thought everyone could hear and that I could control the TV and stuff like that!!

Smoke so many in one day that your throat really hurts, continue to smoke whilst it hurts until you begin to hate it. Works, true story!

Wouldn't recommend doing that at all. Just list down all the real benefits you will gain from giving up. e.g. better heath, better lifestyle, longer life, more money (can go toward savings, holidays, treats, living life!), smell nicer, food and drinks taste better.... the list is long!

1yr and half stopped smoking smoked quite heavy gave up cold turkey best method.

had baby due so is was time to give up . i found a good way to beat the blues was save the money youd spend on smokes for a month and spend it on your pc. inn first month i brought a monitor and a graphics card :D

How can I get my Dad to stop? He's had cancer once because of it. Quit for about a year, and smokes lightly on and off and my mum has nearly divorced him because of it.. They are both far too stubborn. I am the opposite, really annoying!

Did anyone quit? Third day here, and finding in quite tough :(

I'm on my third day too, and I'm finding things mostly okay. I'm using patches, for the second time, and all seems pretty good atm.

I gave up (last time...) in February last year. In April, I went off work sick for 3 months. No cravings at all during this time. I was back at work on the 3rd of August, and by the end of August, I was back on 20 a day :/

This time, I fully intend to stick with it. Never again, despite what my body is trying to tell me :p

Quit for 3 days!

I've had the flu real bad but felt better today so I decided to go to the shops to get some lemsip as I had a sore throat and bought 20 mayfair! :( Really dissapointed in myself because I have quit before for 6 years! :@

I'm just completely lost as to what to do with my hands and miss going outside with a nice cuppa and a smoke! :\

I will try again at some point, I think I just need to get a hobbie and just be more occupied in general, actually I don't really do much if I think about it!

Wish I had someone to quit with me or a partner to kick my ass if I start again!

Well that's day 2 over, almost. Cold turkey here as well, seems to be OK. Got a bit crabby earlier when I found my new shirt for work has shoddy stitching so needs to go back, and my dry clean only work trousers went through the wash... wooo sa. :D

Hope Monday finds all the quitees well.
