I'm looking to get a starter camera and looking into different options and the 500D seems to be a good fit.

I was linked to this, which looks like the best deal around (because it includes a lens) http://www.jessops.com/online.store...ops.com/online.store/products/76113/Show.html

but I found this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CANON-EOS-REB...Cameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item4a9d6b76b2

1. Is there a difference between a Canon 500D and Rebel T1i ?
2. From the ebay store this is a refurb, is there a problem with buying a refurb? My only point of reference is having bought a Dell factory refurb laptop, which pretty much means it's brand new and I still had Dell Warranty. Will this be the case?

Any pointers and recommendations welcomed

Same camera, different name. It's called the KISS 3 (I think?) in Japan. I'm not sure about the refurb, I didn't go for one myself although I was tempted. I bought from J as well, with £50 cashback and 10% back through Quidco...

Yup same camera. Pretty good price, seller doesn't exactly advertise the fact that it's a refurb though. I'd want some more information on condition etc...

Do you have a budget? are you looking to buy a lens as well? Cheapest price for the 500d body only is 500.

Yeap I saw that, but seing as the ebay price includes a lens I thought it might be worth checking that option out too.

edit: Meant to say that Ideally I can only spend 500 for now and I dont have a memory card nor tripod or camera bag yet, so that made the ebay price all that more alluring.

From a quick scan of that listing, I don't see anything about a warranty. (Could be wrong but can't be bothered reading it all).

Just be careful as the T1i is a non-UK model and Canon body warranties aren't international so you'd most likely have problems with Canon UK.

No problems with refurbs per se, my first 400D was a refurb, but it was from the offical Canon outlet rather than A.N.Other ebay shop and personally I'd recommend sticking with them.

Too many choices :(
Quite like the sound of the Nikon D5000

I went and looked at both, I was very close to getting a D90 though after looking at that but i was out of my price range! I wasn't too keen on the screen on the D5000, also having friends with Canon kit made my decision a bit easier.

Can you tell me why you would take a 40D over a 500D ?
From my understanding the 500D is a much newer model and the 40D is being discontinued?

Main reason would be build quality and ergonomics. The 40D is more solid, better built and feels better in your hand, some people like the additional control dials and the LCD display also. Some would argue that the 40D gives cleaner images than the 500D at higher ISO due to pixel density of the CMOS sensor but I think its hard to tell especially when post processed with noise reduction software.

My first DSLR was the 500D and I upgraded to the 5D MK2 recently and although the 500D is a very good camera, I dont think I would want to go back to a XXXD body as it feels cheap and is less comfortable to use than a XXD and XD body.

This basically.

I don't doubt that the 500d can produce fantastic images, but as a user of a XXXD model I can't wait to upgrade to a higher end model:) Build quality, control wheel etc, less fiddling about with menus.

However, if you're after things like HD video and more compact body then by all means aim for a 500D, just don't get caught up with comparing specs because the whole megapixel/additional feature debate doesn't really matter when you get down to actually using the camera and finding out how easy/difficult it is to access functions. Any DSLR these days takes fantastic images, best thing is to get yourself to a shop and have a play.

I dont think the Rebel T1i or Kiss x3 versions of the 500d will have valid warranties outside of the USA or Japan. Ive been looking at the same camera and found the Kiss x3 kit in Bangkok for £450. I am tempted but the lack of international warranty makes me wary. I'll make a decision at the end of the month, been thinking about it for ages but its a non-essential for me so I take my time.

Although for the time being the EOS 500D will sit alongside the 450D in the Canon DSLR line-up there is no doubt that sooner or later it will replace the older model and occupy the spot between the 1000D as and the EOS 50D on its own. The most noticeable new features on the EOS 500D are the higher resolution sensor, the new high-res LCD and the HD video mode but the camera also comes with the latest generation DIGIC imaging processor which brings a few more low-key improvements such as fine-tunable noise reduction and Highlight Tone Priority or a fresher, animated menu design with it. See the list and table below for all the spec and feature changes..

* Higher resolution sensor (15.1 vs 12.2 effective megapixels)
* Extended ISO range up to ISO 12800
* HD video capability
* New 3.0 inch 920K pixels screen
* Adjustable noise reduction and highlight tone priority
* Face Detection in Live View
* Peripheral Illumination Correction
* HDMI output
* Larger buffer in continuous shooting
* Digic 4 style menu design
a lot of knowledge in this site pls visite the site.

Your web link seems to have nothing to do with the thread subject.

Even though the 40D is coming to the end of its life cycle it is still a very capable camera!

I would, sold my 450D for my 40D and its a much better camera overall, build quality, weight, egonomics due to the extra dial, the LCD screen on the top so easy to see quick adjustments and I found it much more capable at higher ISO than the 450D

I would take the 40D any day over the 500D.
The body is solid - the 500D feels like too plasticky.
The extra scroll wheel is a godsend once you're used to it.
The FPS is a lot faster than 500D's. From the price point of feature vs user aesthetics, the 500D is do doubt a few feature over the 40D but given the choice for me, a solid body with a high FPS and IQ for the 40D.

But that's my opinion.
Have you tried holding either of the camera yet?
For all you know, both of them feels naff on your hands but a Nikon/Sony/Pentax/Olympus felt better.
