iphone or an android phone?

If your main issue was the "lag" on the Hero. You should be made aware that the ones in the shop are probably on the original firmware, which suffered from lag problems. The new firmware fixed that problem, very well.

My HTC Hero is runs at the same speed as an iPhone, as is its responsiveness.

Its your choice though, the Nexus doesn't look that great to me (ie. Over rated), however I will look forward to reviews and whatnot. (It also might be a pain to get hold of!) :p

I have the iPhone 3gs and the Hero with latest firmware and it isn't as smooth as the iPhone from my experience. In fact I would go as far to say Its laggy; however not as laggy as the original firmware.

The Hero shouldve had a more powerful CPU ; personally its laginess irritates me as I say 'even with latest firmware'.

If you want an android phone I'd go for one of the later handsets.

ah wiked, cheers for the advice.
well my mate has a htc magic so ill ask him and check what firmware he has and get him to get the latest and have a look. Should give me a better comparison of it.

go for later handsets? as in the droid etc?
which ones would you recommend mate?

i think the hero has a more powerful cpu than the iphone, but (as i assume you'll agree) regardless of hardware its how it performs and how smooth it is.

Thanks again
(beginning to feel that my indecision is manifesting itself as rudeness and bothering you all!! sorry!! :P)

On paper it's more powerful but it's similar to Core 2 Duo and Pentium 4, i.e. It's not all about the numbers. At the moment the Milestone (Droid) is the only handset with enough grunt to show off Android's true potential, more handsets like it will be coming out in the next few months.

The incredibly minor speed difference between the iPhone and HTC Hero on the new firmware shouldn't really be a deciding factor imo, the Hero is as responsive as you would ever need it to be, mine doesn't feel sluggish at all. Also you are probably going to get a better deal to boot on the hero!

I didn't find it an incredibly miner speed difference between the iPhone and hero. Are you referring to the 3g or the 3gs? I have the 3gs.

Either, I am just saying that while the iPhone may be a bit quicker (im not saying it isn't), if there was something you preferred on the Hero, it wouldn't be a remotely good enough reason not to get it as far as I am concerned.

I also think the Hero is a better phone regardless of the minor speed differences, but that is just what I think, for me, with so many phones available its hard to determine what suits a certain person best :p

i'd agree dude!

does anyone know if there are any problems with unlocking the iphone?
do any apps suffer because it is not a certain network etc?

You jailbreak it in order to unlock it, its very straightforward (last did it on a 3G normal but I dont think it will have changed!)

I can't think of any apps that are affected by network, Apple wouldn't allow that as the primary function of the iPhone is the App store, its the only real customisability that it has :p

fair enough - but after owning one I wouldn't recommend it. for a number of other reasons too.My opinion of course.

Well I don't love it immensely, Im offloading it to my girlfriend and getting myself a N900 as it looks a keeper for me :p

The n900 does look good. I have been reading up a lot about it looking at reviews.

The only thing that puts me off are the lack of apps however the browser looks like the best yet. Why have you gone for it? Having firefox in effect the same as the desktop being put on it seems amazing really when you have 'other phones' not running flash etc.

I usually find myself browsing the net on my phone more than anything else, and it has by far the best browser available.

It's customisability options are vast, due to the rooted nature of Maemo, and there are a lot of Apps coming out daily for the platform, and im sure it will flourish in due time.

Any minor downsides to it are scheduled to be fixed in the firmware updates (the first due very soon).

Things that people dislike about it are quite small, such as the resistive touchscreen, which only really would bother anyone if they had gloves on (I never do).
MMS support is being added soon but I never send MMS anyway.

Its camera is one of the best on a smartphone, although its not amazing. (Edit here - I do know its not really a smartphone, but the camera would be of the same principle)

The deal on them is also very good! :D

That is VERY cheap for that phone, it doesn't quite read right to me.

You can pretty much ignore his feedback as he has BOUGHT 11 fairly invaluable items and sold nothing.

Not worth the risk at all mate.

Can I also ask, what has made you decide on an iPhone? :p

Thank you so much for the ebay advice mate, its much appreciated!
Would you steer clear of shipping from america to avoid complications?

Can I also ask, what has made you decide on an iPhone? :p
After all the help you have given, that would be the least i could do!! :D

well, i went down to a local phone shop and had a go with an iphone whilst also having a go with the htc hero.

in all honesty i didnt want to like the iphone, i hate the restrictions they place with profit and control in mind, its cheap and pathetic. and generally i dont like apple. Also their is an abundance of iphones about which somehow reduces the special feel of your own, but thats besides the point.

I had a go with the hero, ive also had a go with my brothers htc magic, and i find compared to the iphone the touch response and the overall feel and animation (on the htc hero + magic) didnt seem quite as smooth as the iphone. I do still really like android and appreciate its honest approach to app development. But for now the iphone just seems that bit slicker and sharper.

Also i viewed this Nexus one preview and was disappointed -
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/02/exclusive-google-nexus-one-hands-on-video-and-first-impressio/
and it appears to be the same as the other android phones really, nothing too new and different. gotta appreciate the 1ghz processor though!

So iphone has clinched for me i think, after a long and arduous decision during which i dreamt of mobile devices.

ooo you may be interested in this, its free android apps, however you may not agree with it, but i thought id let you know all the same and you can make your own choice! -
