Nokia N900

Possibly, but why would you want to? Maemo 5 is great to use, VERY stable (for me so far) - I have had one 'freeze' in 4 weeks and that was some extras testing software. I have installed loads of apps with no bother, the browser is better than the Android browser and Maemo is set up to multi-task, something it does very very well.

I also concur with edgedemon, all the fuss about resistive screen is not justified tbh.

I am VERY tempted to order this on a 12 month contract.

I currently have an XDA Orbit 2 on which I use tomtom sat nav. Will tomtom work on the n900 or any other equivalent sat nav software at present. That's really the only thing holding me back atm.

As far as I am aware you are limited to Ovi Maps for the time being.

TomTom abandoned previous mobile projects due to hackers and so forth, and they are limited to just a few phones at the moment.

Ovi Maps is received as being very good, but lacking in a few areas (such as turn by turn directions etc) - but this is due to be fixed.

Example of the Ovi Maps - http://maps.ovi.com/?lid=MapsBridge&lang=en-GB

Ordered it. :D

N900 ~ £85 inc RMSD

Unlimited Web
Unlimited Txt
300 Mins
~ £40 per month

-12 Months-

Total Price ~ £560

Considering the fact the handset is selling for close to £500 on its own at present, £560 is not bad at all split over 12 months with unlimited web usage in that time. Couldn't get anything close to that for the iphone so it had to be this really. :)

::EDIT::

Forgot to add... 3 months free insurance!

Good stuff e36Adz!

You should be glad you haven't ordered an iPhone, they aren't as good as the N900 and every man and his dog owns one :)

I really don't get this whole "capacitive screen blows resistive out of the water" argument. In using my N900 I haven't come across any situations where I've thought "damn, my screen is unresponsive". Its simply isn't.

Sure, I have to trace a swirl rather than pinch to zoom. Wow. Its hardly a deal breaker.

Sygic Website Press Release. Was supposed to be out by the end of December, but it should be out in Jan sometime. Waiting on it myself, so I'll keep things updated.

Too right, the only people complaining about it either dont own an N900 or have never even touched one.

Anyone here gone from an iphone to one of these? Seriously considering one of these, just had enough of my iphone really, and as I surf the net on my phone a lot, I thought this would fit the bill.

However, I recently had a play on the n97 mini and found the surfing experience on that horrendouse compared to the iphone, I'm assuming that the n900 uses the same browser engine?

Im going to get myself the N900 tomorrow, i've been following this thread from the start and had quite a bit of time on the phone and love it :D

I'm going to go for a 12 month contract and put ~£180 towards the phone to keep the monthly charge low.
I will most likely go for this:
700 mins
Unlimited Texts
Unlimited Internet
@ £30p/m / £35p/m

Which works out just under £600 which i think is really good conisdering the handset itself is £500.

still don't see this deal either there is a 35plan but still need to add £5 for unlimited internet

The N900 browser is based on firefox so nothing like the symbian browser. Does full websites such as facebook and ebay and also is multi-task enabled and has full flash support.

+ Funnily enough, the S60 browser has far more in common with the iPhone browser - they both use the Webkit engine.

I got mine yesterday and love it so far :D
One slight niggle so far though which i probably me but anyway; i'm using my o2 sim card in it until my number gets ported across to me Vodafone sim but for what ever reason i can't get connect to O2 Mobile web, anyone have any idea why? When i go to the "Selec Connection" screen it shows up with O2 Mobile Weband my WLAN connection.

Christo needs to keep the first post updated with any hints/tips/shortcuts/apps etc that get mentioned in the thread.
Anyone got any tips or apps they want to recommend so i can get some stuff on my N900 before trawling through this whole thread?

Thanks for the info guys. Really, I just found the browser on the n97 mini slow and unresponsive. Plus zooming in and out was unintuitive.

I'm off to the nokia store in regent st tomorrow to have a play. Saw a dummy in carphone warehouse and thought the design was rather "functional" and uninspired. Am hoping a "live" unit will be more attractive.

What deal did you get after all cannot find the one you related to further up?

Call Forwarding App, FBReader, DOSBox, Greasemonkey for the Browser, Hermes (fills in your contacts personal info for you), Irssi (yay, IRC), Pidgin, oh, and definitely OpenSSH.

This was my thought too kinda why I am thinking X10 might edge my buying decision with google maps on board
