Howdy :)

After seeing Avatar in 3D, I'm sorely tempted to grab an nVidia 3D Vision kit..

The only problem is, I can't go somewhere to try before I buy. Does anyone on here have one? Would you recommend one?

Is there still a lack of support for OpenGL games?

Cheers :)

Its amazing and far better then its cracked up to be.
I am very happy I took the chance.

Everyone who says anything bad about it I guarantee hasn't tried it!

In the same boat as you uv!

I've read quite a few reviews now and they all seem to end somewhat positively.

Notable cons are:
Performance hit
Only small monitor/resolution are currently available
60hz in 3d mode might bother some
Headaches after an hour or so of use(not sure about this one...)
No support for OpenGL
Can be expensive

Think ill wait an see how fermi performs and look at taking the plunge then.

Hopefully come March/April there will also be more 24" 120hz monitors available to choose from too as that Acer one looks naff!

I've been thinking about buying the 3D Vision kit, and the new 24" Acer 120Hz screen, but I am unsure as to whether it's worth it or not...

Like the OP there isn't anywhere that I could go to test it out first to see just how good it is, so that kinda puts me off.

As in the other thread,

Is it a cool toy to play with.. yes

Does it have a wow factor?, in some games definitely, in most it is so so
You wouldn't multiplayer with it on though, i don't know if this is a factor for you

I didn't watch any movies using it (are there any?) so can't comment

Is it worth it?.. no

I personally would wait until next gen when we will see if it is taken up (and subsequently prices coming down)

Sorry if this is a noobular question, but cba searching to find out.

Does it work with any game, or is it game specific like PhysX?

Thanks mate, that's a fair old list of games there, and there's very little titles that have had a poor rating..

I really should read up about it to find out exactly how it works!!

I think it is totally worth it.

I already had a gtx 260, so i bought the glasses and screen for £310. At the same time i bought an ati 5870 for £300.

I have the viewsonic 120hz plugged into the nvidia card. I have my 24wmgx3 plugged into the 5870.

In the last month i have not used the 24 Nec screen for any games. The reason being, the 3d vision is just to good. It some games eg tombraider, wow, gta4, batman, re5.... its is jawdropping. I simply will never play these games again in 2d.
Some games dont work so well, eg fear 2 (the problem is the crosshair, the ingame one is at the wrong depth. You can use the nvidia crosshair, but you cant remove the fear 2 one. So you have to play whilst ignoring the game crosshair). However the game looks so good in 3d, that i will still only play in 3d mode despite the crosshair problem.

Some games dont work well at all, and are better played in 2d mode eg crysis.
I have far more games that work well than dont.
Another plus is the screen itself (i play ut3 insta, team fortress, quake etc, all in 2d as i take them serious and 3d makes them harder). Compared to my nec 24wmgx3 : I lose 2 inches, fall in res from 1920x1200 down to 1680x1050. The colours are a downgrade. This screen has backlight bleed the NEC doesnt. Viewing angles are horrible compared to the NEC too. However for games, the 120hz is the best. I dont care about any of the downgrades that i listed as the smoothness the 120hz brings more than makes up for it. My frag counts instantly rose.

So my point is, (presuming you have a gtx 260 or better) for the same price of a 5870, you will gain a screen far better suited for gaming than any 60hz screen. You will also gain a far better graphical upgrade than a gfx card upgrade. The 3d looks higher resolution than it actually is, so i dont miss the drop in res. The graphics look way better cos they are in 3d. So to me from my experience it is the best upgrade that a high end gamer could make.

The way i see it is, going from 260- 5870 i would only see a small benefit in a few games. With the 3d a see a HUGE improvement in a lot of games.

GTX280 :)

Whilst 3DV seems to cut FPS down by ~40%, I'd be running at 1680 rather than 1920, so it should be fine.

My main issue is that I still play a lot of OpenGL games - Q3 based games for example. It seems ridiculous that 3DV works with OGL on the Quadro cards, but not the Geforce ones!

If I do decide to get 3D Vision, I'll be getting the Acer 24" once it's available, so even if I don't like the 3d vision, I'll still have a larger screen, as I'm currently using a 22"..

Though, would there be any noticable difference between 1680x1050 and 1920x1080??

::edit::

I'm also using a GTX280.

Both of you are in the position to get 3D vision, it is awesome.
If by some small miracle you don't like it then send it back within 7 days for a refund under the distance selling act. If it doesn't suit you or if it gives you a headache (unlikely) then just sent it back. Nothing to lose really :)

Results vary depending on the game so i've read.

An example being Red Alert looks pretty average yet Civilization looks great according to tweaktowns review. (pages 8 & 14)

C&C3 works well apart from the mouse looks on the wrong level, also the energy bars look odd.
Most games work very well, Modern Warfare 1 & 2 are both awesome with it.
TBH I dont play single player games without it anymore. Isnt good competitively online though :)

I guess that's where you go back to "2D" and reap the rewards of 120hz :D
Fermi will be the deciding factor in it for me, hurry it up nVidia!

I'm assuming when 3D blurays are released such as Avatar that 3D Vision will support them provided you have the right software? e.g. Power DVD

no real performance issues for me although i'll certainly be getting fermi for even more frames. as has been said you don't need anti aliasing in 3D its nowhere near as noticeable and also make sure you force triple buffering with d3doverrider as 3D forces vsync on so that gets you a few more frames

i wouldn't play quake with it (if opengl worked) but i can play l4d 1&2 online and be competitive and same goes with iracing, rfactor etc

its definitely worth it, if fact i'm gonna get a 3D projector next, optoma hd66 looks nice and quite cheap, i want 2 foot pop out! :) can't go back to playing some games in 2D now. far cry 2, l4d, batman, resi 5, avatar, streetfighter 4 and tomb raider underworld to name a few are all stunning, especially avatar

the effect really is far more impressive than other stuff bandied about in the pc world especially stuff like dx11 and physx

Batman 3D Intro avi

Avatar 3D screens

Streetfighter 4 3D screens

Oblivion 3D screens

you need the glasses to view those
