OcUK Motors : Tell me about the BMW X5

my only experience of an x5 4.6 was a few years ago on a dual carriage way near home. i was in the golf and we'd both given it full beans up this hill which bends to the right.

it was just hilarious to see something as large as an x5 barreling off up the side of the hill. once the road got steeper, it really started to pull away, but they do have a fair amount of welly!

Wow monkey_boy, I like that Range Rover you linked a lot, I'd very much like something like that myself, something like the Jag, but with the ability to go where the Jag cannot.

What are the running costs on a Cayenne V8 like anyway out of interest ? ...Whilst I've never been a big fan of the looks, I can't deny, it's a huge amount of car for the money.

In that case he might quote figures but he wont acheive high 20's as an average in mixed driving. Perhaps on a long trip...

i've read in a few places that the 4.4 is very close to 3.0 mpg. Was shocked when i first read it, then again when more places were saying the same!

Get a Cayenne instead of the X5, i love mine.

Running costs are the usual Porsche, but then you dont buy them for economy do you.

Is it so wrong to want one of these :D ..I feel like I shouldn't, but I do ...damn it looks mean and that engine! The Range Rover V8 moves like continental drift compared to these, and the supercharged one costs twice as much.

How reliable are they? Whats an annual service cost like?

Mine is a 2006 turbo, my last service cost me £2400 but that was with discs and pads.

A non turbo would be a bit less.

Iv had a few niggles but they were dealt with under warranty.

If you have one over 3 years old and havent extended the Porsche warrany, go to a decent indie like JZM for servicing.

I get about 14 to the gallon :)

Interesting thread, have been looking at SUVs the past few days - perhaps it's because of all this snow.

The RRS looks good, best in HST form in my opinion, but I'm not sure what the reliabilty and quality is like. The V8 diesel looks a good engine, but I think the performance is still a little bit sloth like with all that weight. Prefer the idea of the supercharged petrol, even though the mpg would suck bigtime.

I like the idea of the Cayenne, the look better from 2008 onwards. The GTS seems the best all rounder to me, looks better than the others (less like its on stilts) and doesn't carry the huge price premium of the turbo. The reviews say it handles pretty well on the road at speed and the build quality must be pretty good, its a porsche after all.

The new X5s are a bit fugily to me, compared to the previous ones around 2006-2007 I think. Poor offroad ability and to me, not as special as the other two even if it's probably the most car-like with regards to road handling.

Im guesing the Cayenne would hold its value best out of the three, so I think that's where my money would go (if I was spending 40k).

I always thought that comparing the costs of the Turbo to the standard 'S' was like comparing the costs between an M3 and a 330i?

The HST is hideously 'bling'. As is the GTS - have you seen the nose on that thing? It looks like a ******* love child of a 911 and a 60s Dodge Charger. I think a Cayenne would be the hardest to shift on privately by a long long way, especially if the owner had started using Indy's. Not sure about the reliability of the supercharged V8 in the RR, but unless i'm mistaken it's the same engine used by Jag and is supposed to be highly rated.
