Bmw drivers gearing up

Buying snow chains would seem to be a sensible investment, should last you years =\

So will the tyres if you take them off when things heat up. Ideal thing to do is to purchse an extra set of wheels and some winter rubber thne you can switch. Budget approach is some steelies and the rubber. I can get BMW steelies for £70 for 4 then another £200 for a medium performance tyre. Should see me out 2-3 years.

Which is what most do. Get some spare rims and simply have them swapped on and off ensuring you get a few years out of them.

Did you edit that? could have sworn there wasnt that much in your post originally :(

OMGz, I HAVE A BMW AND SNOCHAINZ, ARE U CALLING ME AN IDIOTZ?

More than happy with my chains, thanks :)

Of course they're getting snow chains/tyres fitted. In this weather, it is impossible to maximise the use of the BMW Lane with normal "peasant" tyres.

Anybody know of any where you can get some good information regarding the effectiveness and pros and cons of winter tyres/chain/socks in one place?

BMW Germany, I had some very useful advice on winter tyres. ;)

Won't/Don't the chains scuff up the alloys?

Also, why would anybody LOL at the fact that they want to be as safe as possible given the severe conditions outside. After seeing an Argos delivery truck go into the side of a neighbours 5 series and way too many 4x4's/FWD/RWD cars skate out of control on the road to the side of my house I think equipping yourself for the conditions if you need to go out has to be the most sensible thing to do.

Seems fair to me if the snow really is making your life hell day in day out and I know in a BMW it can be bloody awful to drive in the snow

Scuff up the alloys or slide off into a ditch and write off the car....

Hmm tough one.

But looking at the pic in this thread the chain that touches the alloys looks to be plastic coated.

Calm down, I was only asking.

Some bits of the chain look coated but other bit don't hence the question.

And why would a BM slide into a ditch when everybody here states that DSC will kick in to save the day!

I'm barely able to get along some roads on my travels yet still wouldn't be able to use chains because of the wild variation between gritted main roads and non gritted minor ones. I'm currently on the lookout for a set of 16" alloys for some winter tyres :o

that wont stop other cars driving into you and special tyres dont come with experience in how to drive on snow, as far as im aware

How do you normally get experience in something? How do you think millions of people in other countries manage the first time on winter tyres in snow (including myself about 10 years ago)?

For someone who I previously considered a 'driver' you really do seem to be scared of this snow stuff.
