What do we think of Skodas?

That does look rather nice. How much are they new and basic (no whistles or bangs)?

I am not sure, the Skoda dealers have various offers depending on the time of year, I was offered a new vRS for £16600 on the road with metallic paint 2.0 TFSI, which I thought was pretty good.
The Superb Estate was in Autocar recently at £17,500 however it was the 1.4 TSI (not sure that's right, the one with the supercharger and Turbo anyhow)
Although that engines great I don't think it is the right engine for a A6 sized car.

You can't really compare Rover and Skoda. If the Fabia was as unreliable as BL-owned Rover then I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Way to miss the point. I was just over-emphasizing the need to not go with a "that'll do" attitude, regardless of the application. In this case "that'll do" isn't good enough when choosing a relatively expensive car. I wasn't drawing any kind of symbolism between Skoda and Rover.

I really don't want to go down that road, I think it'd just end up turning this thread into some kind of war.

So, you are perfectly happy to back up a car without any solid argument, but not willing to explain why you wouldn't pick a better car? Odd.

My point always has been that the Fabia vRS is a perfectly competent motorway car. Not the best, but more than good enough, and certainly better than most of OcUK motors give it credit for.

Just because a car can get up and down a motorway at motorway speeds doesn't mean it's good at the job. The Fabia isn't long nor heavy enough to be a competent motorway cruiser, no if's, and's, or but's, it just isn't, heck I wouldn't take my LCR out over the 330d on the motorway, and that's even before contemplating economy.

Just thought I'd chime in, having complained about my (humble 1.4 8v) Fabia earlier. For a small car, it makes a nice motorwary cruiser. Comfortable, rather spacious for its size and quieter than a number of much larger hire cars I've tried.

Sluggish though. Due to the lack of nippiness it's crap about town.

I refrained from commenting on the stupidity of smaller cars making bad motorway cruisers. I think people are just picky and full of crap. I've done 60k on my Clio and at the very least 25k of those on the motorways. It's completely fine.

I've also been in a Fabia (bro inlaw) where we did a 14 hour trip from Denmark to Austria. Yet again, completely fine and comfortable.

This is true but there's better cars out there for the task in hand. It's irritating when people claim certain cars are something they are not. Much like twoblacklines and his Passat, that's a comfortable motorway cruiser built for the job but he thinks it's a 'fun' car. Same with the Fabia vRS, it's a 'fun' car but it's no motorway cruiser.

I know that wasn't at me but i'll answer it anyway.

A large hatchback like an ST220 (if I could swallow the fuel bills) or a VAG mid-sized hatch with the 170ps engine (if not).

We know what you went for and it wasn't Fabia shaped :p

I think people are just picky and full of crap.

What's wrong with being picky? If you are putting a large amount of money in a car, you want something that does the job well. Just good enough doesn't really cut it. I mean you don't marry a woman if she just 'good enough' do you :p

Anyway, as a small hatchback owner, I would prefer as larger car as possible if I was on the motorway a lot of the time. My Fiesta does what it's supposed to do, go to the shops and short journeys. I am not going to pretend that it's a good cruiser just because I did 400 miles in a day and it didn't make me die and I didn't go blind/deaf.

I have just been looking at pictures of the new Superb Shooting Brake on the web, I like it even more now, that's a winner with the right engine!

Sorry fella; didn't realise that was going to get such an emotional response.

Can we all stop picking on Fox, now, please?

You know what you need, dontcha? :D :p

Now my missus' Fiesta is crap on motorways...

A better car?

Our Fabia vRS is perfect for the sort of driving my Mrs. does, which is lots of miles between crappy towns in South Wales, some of which is on B roads, some on A roads. It is small enough for her to be confident in when parking etc., while still having enough torque/hp for overtaking. Being paid by the mile the relatively high mpg means she gets extra pennies for spending on other things.

Last weekend we drove from South Wales to Stoke, on to Leicester then back to South Wales in it. It was no 7 Series but it performed better than a 1.2 Corsa, or a Fiesta. It isn't much different to driving my Octavia on the motorway, although it has less engine noise at motorway speeds which can be nice. It is no supercar, but it still puts a childish grin on my face when I jump in the drivers seat, even if it is a cheap thrill from the narrow powerband.

I don't like the wallowy suspension and stupid coloured seats which are a nightmare to keep clean but apart from that I love the little Fabia.

As for the new Superb, awesome car.

I'm not a fan of the saloon, but the estate/tourer/combi/whatever is a vast improvement.

You keep calling the Superb a saloon. The biggest improvement of the mk2 Superb over the last one is that it's finally NOT a saloon...

There are plenty of other reasons to choose said car. It's a warm hatch that'll give good fuel economy.

It's also cheap to insure, and is well built.

Hmm, if you're going to just ignore what I say then I just won't bother in future - you can stay put in your little bubble of ignorance for all I care. :)

but not willing to explain why you wouldn't pick a better car? Odd.

In this thread, no. Just witnessing the almost feral reaction from certain members at the mere suggestion that anything other than a saloon can be used on the motorway, I really don't think it's wise.

And again with your opinion. Seriously, sometimes people pick a motorway car based on more than just refinement. I know it's a horrible thought, but they do.

Care to give an example of a quality someone looks for in a motorway car other than its performance at motorway speeds and its comfort/composition on the road?

I bet it miffed of a lot of mini cooper owners when the fabia vrs won on top queer round the track. If the straights had been longer it would have completely took the urine out of the cooper although the cooper was better round the corners.

LOL

"Halp, im scared, people are backing up there opinions to me in a nonpleasant manner to me on the internet"

No one has gotten "feral", I think most people have just gotten confused or at most called you out as some sort of fanboy

Then the proper hot mini, the cooper s would **** it's leg and take a massive **** all over the vRS....

But he's not saying that the Fabia is a great motorway car - he's saying its 'okay' and 'competent' on the motorways and 'fine' for the occasional long distance journey.
