Moral of the story - Always HPI check your new purchase!

e: Beaten

I'm not sure that makes sense... either it did occur to you to get one done and you chose not to, in which case you were negligent, or it didn't occur to you to HPI a £30k car which seems pretty fantastical.

Anyway, what's done is done and all you can really do is write off the partial loss to a bad experience. I'd be expecting to sell it for sub-£30k if I were you to be honest, and it being a prestige car you might get quite a few people making OIRO £27k. :(

Basically I forgot to do it at time of purchase. I would have it done it had I remembered, I didn't consciously not do an HPI check as it were! Wont be forgetting in future thats for sure!

I recall two Cat D cars up for sale before xmas at £30k and £31k on either PH or autotrader, so aiming for that kind of money. Will just have to see what happens really. Will be changing the advert to highlight this new info once I have clarified as much as possible.

The other guy said to get in contact with him if I change my mind on price as he would still be interested, he has seen the car and is happy with it, but is worried come resale time his end - understandably really.

Surely the fact the seller showed an HPI cert must go as him claiming it's HPI clear? I know poor old TomO should have done one too, but at the point of being showed an HPI cert that he had done and him not then saying "Oh yeah, it was stolen/recovered and is now on the register" would surely be a grey area.

The way I read it, the guy TomO bought it from showed an HPI from when he bought it. If it was stolen from him and then recovered, it wouldn't be on the prior HPI he had. AFAIK he was under no obligation to say it had been stolen under his ownership.

However, I would really really highly reccomend chasing the issue up with HPI and any relevant insurance companies because it wouldn't be the first time i'd seen an HPI report with completely erroneous information on it.

Agreed a sale on the M3 last night, the guy was coming round this morning to pick up the car / pay for it and called to say he had just done an HPI check and it was previously stolen recovered!

****!!!!!!!

no idea why I didn't HPI this car when i bought it, but thats done now. The guy I bought it from must have lied to me though as I am sure I asked all the right questions, but thats not really going to help now. He had the HPI check from when he bought the vehicle and showed me all the finance documents etc. so I thought it was all above board.

****, not a good start to the day!

...anyone know the value of my car now?:(

My advice.

Buyer beware. Dig out the old HPI cert, show that and pull the same trick as the bloke you bought it off.

If they dont check or ask a direct question, their problem.

Just dont lie if he asks you.

You seem like a nice bloke :p

So...Why do people fit trackers to their cars if, when they get it back, its worth a lot less and hard to sell?

Because if they get it back quickly it isn't classed as 'Stolen Recovered'.

The car was an insurance writeoff hence it is recorded on the database as being such. What happens is that the car is stolen, not found, the insurance company deems it a total loss, pays out and THEN the car is found. This is when a car will be flagged as stolen recovered.

If its nicked and the cops find it the next day it wont be flagged, just as a car which you crash into a wall and have repaired won't be a Cat D either.

Are you 100% sure about that?

98% sure. The database records insurance writeoffs? It wont be a writeoff if its recovered prior to the insurance company paying out?

Sometimes it is recovered without pay out and insurance companies record it as a zero value claim. This is what happened to my mates LCR after his keys were stolen. No idea if it shows up on a HPi though

That makes no sense? The insurance company haven't had to pay out anything so how can they list a claim, let alone a write off? I'm with Fox on this one, but I'd be interested to see what the insurance gurus say.
