Driving in snow

hahaha omg that was some seriously funny ****

I love it when the first girl looks outta the car and has a bemused look on her face, like wtf do i do now ahhh!

surely, instead of braking, they should have tried to steer a little bit!

i really fail to see what the issue with snow is. i haven't driven much in the last 2 years and i don't think i've EVER driven in proper snow like now.

had to drive for the first time this year today in the snow and i had zero issues or slips. i just considered my route instead of taking the quickest way. i avoided the way involving hills and just went the motorway way. had to go up a hill once and instead of taking the shortest route which involved turning left at a t junction on the start of the hill i just drove to a junction further down the road which waould allow me to get a bit of speed up for the hill. simples. :)

I learnt how to control skidding round corners today, it was ace and very educational :) Obviously on a completely safe dead lane that I know very very well and that no one hardly uses.

I'd have thought my car (06 320D SE) would be entertaining to drive on ice, but its not bad at all once DSC is off. Covered about 500 miles in the weather and only had one hairy moment on a really badly iced road round a corner where it skidded, not the only one either as the A class scrunched up to a parked polo attested to..managed to correct the skid about 2 inches away from making an A class sandwich..
Did some donuts in the empty car park at work for fun.. came out and watched the wheels spin in reverse while the car went no where.. much laughs.

Got stuck in the ST just now :( The snow was so deep in the road up to the work car park the splitter and under tray were acting like a snow plough! Had to get a mate to come and clear the snow and dig me out.

The road conditions in and around Middlesbrough are a disgrace, none of the roads have been gritted or ploughed (apart from people with a low ride height ;)). Even the A66 the main road round Middlesbrough was compacted snow & ice this morning

I went to a local carpark about 7am this morning to have a play but turns out like most of the roads here that the carpark is covered in a layer of solid ice so the moment you tried to slide even a small amount it turned into a slippery skating game - absolutely no control due to how slippery it is!

I managed to really properly get the Jag sideways yesterday, pulling (carefully I might add) off a minor road onto an A road down a slight hill I pulled up the road (turning to my left of course) which back-tracks the route of the other one slightly, as I wanted to go to the fuel station, rather than following the route across the road to the other carriagway where I would say 80% of the traffic goes, so I had a big sea of slush and a bit of compacted snow to drive through before I got onto the A road proper, and when I did that I had to try and get away with a little more urgency than the absolute crawl I'm usually forced down to in this weather, well anyway, you can imagine and indeed I had an idea of what might happen.

However, there was nothing to hit so off I went anyway, I entered the main carriage way with the back end of the car in the right hand lane and the front in the left :p ...I bet I looked pretty cool though, an 18ft black Jag going sideways showering the central reservation with slush and such, I'd be lying if I said it caught me by surprise, I knew what was liable to happen, I also may have possibly found my finger in the vacinity of the DSC button, and it may have had some ...contact :D

Slightly less fun was the fact that I couldn't actually pull off my own drive earlier, I had to dig my wheels out somewhat and then use sand driectly under my rear wheels to get any traction to get off the damn drive.

Typically though my assessment of the cars snow capability so far, is well ...awful, really awful, albeit not quite as bad as my old 330Ci though. The Jag heats up faster too, which is nice.

I'm gonna attempt to move the rex today, it's been sitting under 4" snow for the past week :) Wide tires and 18" alloys are not good in snow!

Got stuck in the MX5 this morning. Fresh snow over a layer of ice on the backroads around here, my T1-Rs were useless. The smallest incline and they would just spin. Tried everything, super smooth pulling away, lifting the clutch in idle in 1st/2nd resulted in wheel spin. Rocking backwards and forwards. Instead of reversing home I had to call a couple of friends out to push me back :D

That is how I've negotiated every major/minor junction this week :D.

Having an LSD has made things so much easier in the snow.

Went out for the first time today since the cometh of the snow to drop my daughter off at the station. Took the wifes car as it has narrower tyres thinking that her car would be safer. Going up the brow of a hill/bridge where the lights were red, I saw the car in the next sliding around having difficulty coming to a stop. Like an old man I started commenting how the guy was driving way too fast and too close to the car in front, applied my brakes and the ABS kicked in with the car sliding up the hill, caught me completely off guard and sat there like a frozen rabbit. Eventually the car did stop but it would have been complete lol-FAIL if I had crashed into the car in front going up hill.

There is an interesting article on driving in snow and ice at BBC online.

Incidentally, I gather that farmers often have a shovel that they can fit to the front of their tractors and that back in the day, they frequently cleared snow from country roads; they have apparently been told that they will be prosecuted if they do this because they use "Red" diesel in their tractors. I understand that this also applies if they offer to tow vehicles stranded on the public highway
