Driving in snow

our bin men have been twice in a week :o catching up from when they missed us over new year supposedly

and there was about a foot of snow with many cars getting stuck in the road

Chains :)

I just think the whole idea of gritting roads so much that you can drive as normal is a waste of time - spend less on making the vehicles drive better in the conditions and we'd all cope a lot better.

Need snow ploughs though, I'm not having a silly noddy car with 2 foot clearance.

And bin men - gah, I understand they don't want to slide that thing, it'd take out a house, but it's becoming a bit much now, I've had to take mine to the dump myself it's so bad.

Wonder how much a few of these on the trucks would cost: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPd3O5_SJEs

I don't mean to be rude but, did you not ruddy well read what I said? ...I ordered a set of snow chains last Tuesday, they have not been delivered yet for reasons beyond my control or my understanding (the company I ordered from will be receiving an email about my dissatisfaction though).

And mjt: I can't shovel the compacted icy snow because the big plastic snow shovel I do have is only any good for soft snow. I don't have anything strong enough to break through the ice, I did have a metal short handled coal shovel too, but I've already bent that horribly as it just isn't strong enough, then again it was never designed to need to be used like a pick axe. What I need is a strong steel shovel that I can use the edge of to break through the ice, and it is pretty damn hard now it's been compacted by vehecles and people and time. Now if only I could get some place to buy one, I'd be in business.

I wasn't having a moan for the sake of it, I don't have the tools to help myself, I have ordered some of them but they aren't here right now, and there isn't much I can do about that. Next winter I will be much better prepared before the snow hits, this time I wasn't as I thought it would be like the past years winters, i.e. nothing worth bothering about.

And yes those auto chain systems are very good, they are used on turn table ladder platforms and ALPS by the fire service. Not sure weather they use them on water tenders or not tbh.

Besides I'm British, so I reserve the right to moan and grumble about anything and everything that I like. It's a national past time for many anyway.

Ahh, the first day I'm well and truely snowed in. Can't get my car up the epic hill at the end of my street.
I'm extremely displeased, I now have to use the peasant wagon to get to college :(

I'm home from work ill (sinusitis) and have been watching out the window at our hill... so far three 4x4s have made it down and the only vehicle that made it up as far as my house is a.... Skoda estate . Don't know what it was but it was LHD and on foreign plates and had all four wheels spinning the whole way. Skodas version of Quattro I guess?

Maybe they're not coming becasue we don't hand around in our doorways wearing a dressing gown. Maybe its in fact your bin men that are gay :p
:o + :D

I was out there yesterday clearing snow in my Minus 40 size 14 boots & me dressing gown at 4pm when the traffic was backed up, I even wore my Russky hat flaps down as well.
Even though I didn't look I could tell people were laughing as I could actually hear them. :p:p:p

It was replying to Fox's comment, not yours. I wouldn't imagine anyone would get winter tyres, chains, or anything else - good on you for trying - but in retrospect as somebody else said you could just dig drive :)

And yes before you start I know how hard it is buying a shovel at the moment, everyone else got there first :(
