A stalactite (from the Greek stalasso, (σταλάσσω), "to drip" and meaning "that which drips") is a type of speleothem (secondary mineral) that hangs from the ceiling of limestone caves. It is a type of dripstone. Sauce.
Those are Icicles </Pedant>
Impressive none the less.

When I was in the Ukraine over Christmas, there were many buildings that were blocked off with that red and white tape. When asking why it was, my father explained it was to prevent people walking under them and subsequently getting killed by falling ice.
Ice blocks are heavy, and don't make an awful lot of noise when they come crushing down.
Seemingly there are lots of deaths in Moscow (where he lives) every winter because of this as it's seen as too costly to install metal awnings to catch the buggers.
I didn't even consider the dangers, wonder if we can purify the gene pool a bit in Britain this winter...

just looked out the back of mine, and my neighbour has some pretty big ones (crystals that is!) hanging off ledge, would take a photo but might be seem dodgee or something.
