RAM appears as half the amount installed!

Hi all,

Posting of behalf of a friend, his motherboard is a MS-7222 and however much RAM he installs (e.g. 1 x 1GB or 2 x 1GB) and however many sticks he tries, the BIOS and Windows only reports half of the installed amount!?

Can anyone advise please?

Dodgy RAM or motherboard. Check and see if there is a particular slot or slots that are not registering.

both slots report the same, i.e if you fit 1GB stick in either slot, Windows and BIOS report 512MB in either slot

A very quick Google suggests there is a BIOS problem with single sided memory modules only showing half of the capacity. Apparently using double sided memory sorts it, which seems back to front to me, but that was from the official MSI forum so...

try the ram in another computer.

thanks guys, it's single sided RAM, and the RAM has been tested in another PC so its definately OK

has he fiddled with the bios recently? maybe you could clear the bios settings and see what happens? by removing the cmos battery

nothing's been changed in the BIOS, tried resetting the CMOS though.

any other ideas please?
