Bargain Barge?

Thats a bit like saying why buy an Audi TT or an Audi S3 when you can get a Seat Leon 1.4S or a Skoda Octavia 20VT Laurin and Klement.

Just because the platform and drivetrain are the same does not mean the cars will feel the same.

Have a poke around a Flying Spur then a Pheaton and you are left in no doubt which is the £50,000 car and which is the cheap, forgotten Volkswagen

Call me naive, but I've got my doubts that a car that once retailed for £70,000+ a couple of years ago is going to have an interior described as cheap. Despite what epic deprecation has done to the price, the Pheaton was still designed and built to be a Marque's Flagship luxury car, not to be a rival to a Mondeo.

I haven't had a play around with a Pheaton interior, but I can tell you from the pictures I've just pulled up that the seats (particularly the rears) do look pretty similar. I can even tell you that the front seat switch panel looks identical to the one found in Spurs, bar the chrome surrounds on the buttons.

Does the Flying Spur have the better interior? I'm sure without a doubt that it does. I'm not sure how the Pheaton's interior is produced, but I've been lucky enough to go to Crewe and watch the interiors be made, stitch by stitch, The wood be crafted and the chrome knobs be made by hand, etc. The work they do is truly amazing, but that's not to say that it will automatically blow whatever the Pheaton has into next week...

Put it this way, If you could have a BMW that shared a large amounts of mechanical components with an M5, had a slightly worse interior but could be had for a fifth of the price would you not jump at the chance?

Odd box suggestion, and assuming you could find one(!) Granada 2.9i Scorpio / Ghia 4x4

Assuming you can find one, you'll get it for buttons, if its lasted this long, chances are its a good one.

Rwd handling ish but with iirc 60/40 split 4WD.

Long forgotten by many, but I'll never forget the one I used to drive regularly.

Oh, drive it like a Donkey and you'll get way below 20MPG.... :o :D

what about a 9-3?

good value for money, and turbos are always fun

or a 9000 if you really want a barge
http://pistonheads.com/sales/1363246.htm

9000 aeros can be had for very little money but do handle a bit crap unless you spend a bit of money on the suspension. Engines are bulletproof though and as long as you find a decent Saab specialist they aren't that expensive to keep running.

I highly doubt that listed 9k has a bigger turbo though, if it has they haven't given it a good map as aeros make 225bhp As standard. Although looking at it, it might not be an aero maybe just a tweaked normal. Look for an abbot aero and it'll be very quick.

I know this is a little above budget, but have you considered something like an X308 Jaguar XJR, there are a few around the £4k mark, this one looks like a reasonble bet, if you can stretch the budget at all, then you can pick up V8 XJ's for less than £3k, just not the supercharged one (well maybe a knackered one, but you don't want that :p)

With a 4.0 litre V8 supercharged engine, putting out not all that much under 400bhp, it'll shift a near 2 tonne car faster than you would believe, if it's in good order then you have a very rapid, very comfortable cruiser, that will absorb the imperfections of our less than perfect roads with consummate ease and blat down the straight at Silverstone fast enough to worry some quite serious sports cars.

Reliability on these can be a cocern, but the X308s are fairly reliable on the whole, it was the previous model that was really bad, there were a few issues but have a good read first, it's deffinetly not a car to buy blind, it's worth doing the research or it could very easily cost you it's purchase price again. Lot of car for the money though if you get it right, infact it looks so similar to the next model, the one I have, you could put a private plate on and only someone that has a clue is going to know you aren't driving a very expensive car indeed.

You can also buy an awful lot of Lexus for that budget, you'ed get an LS400 in pretty damn good order for £3k, infact of all the cars of this type to buy at this sort of price point, it's likely to give you the least trouble, but driving an older model Lexus LS is really more like piloting a star-ship than driving a car, but then I kind of like that myself. I am struggling to imagine one on a track though.

If you want fast and comfortable at around your price point try and find a Mitsubishi Galant or Legnum VR4. Epic handling and toys in abundance. Twin turbo 2.5L good for around 300bhp I think. Weighs around 1400kg so heavy but not epic 2 ton barge heavy. 4 wheel drive with active suspension and the tiptronic gearbox so auto when cruising and semi-auto manual when you want it.

For example: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/635041.htm

Or a low milage manual version: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1175919.htm

Lol, 1400kg isn't heavy! a Gallant doesn't really count as a barge in my book, more like a fat Evo with a bit less 'asbo'. I like the Gallant though, good car in it's own right.

True but as he mentioned MK3 mondeos in his first post I thought this might be worth a mention as they are similar in comfort, the Galant having the nicer interior by far though. A friend at work has a VR4 with the cream leather interior and it's a nice place to be. Ride quality is very good too considering how planted it is through the bends.

I was thinking Scorpio/Granada but forgot they did a 4x4 so didn't mention it as it'd have been FWD.

Actually, Both Scorpios and Granadas are Rear Wheel Drive ;).

The VR4 is a good shout, but if I had to take a gamble on a twin turbocharged Japanese nutter barge it would be one of these without a doubt:

A few cheap modifications and some wide but discreet Supra 17" wheels and you've got the ultimate sleeper. I haven't actually gotten around to running some insurance quotes on one, but I don't hold out much hope.

To be honest, I think I'm pretty much sold on an e34, but the idea of restoring my e30 Touring shell and fitting heated leather seats and a 2.8 24V/12V '335' engine conversion is beginning to grow on me. My short attention span with cars will be my undoing :(...
