i seem to be having problems overclocking my cpu by only 2-4%

i hear that the Q9400 is good for over clocking and as it stands my cpu when runing is sat runing at 1600.0mhz il explain my ''CPU-Z'' spec that its showing

VISTA ULTIMATE 64BIT

MB.. gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3R
CORE SPEED...1596.3mhz
MULTIPLIER... X6-X8
BUS SPEED... 266.0MHZ
RATED FSB...1064.0MHZ
CORE VOLTAGE...1.088 V
DDR2 RAM 8G at the moment overclocked at 1.9v

the only items i have altered in the bios is the ram voltage by + 0.1 (1.9)now
and with M.I tweaker set the C.I.A.2 to...

cruise...rebooted...(increases CPU frequencys by 5%)... system..ok
sports...rebooted...(increases CPU frequencys by 7%)... system...ok
racing...rebooted...(ncreases CPU frequencys by 9%)... system -CRASHES..

to me thats hardly much overclock for my system or CPU to crash and i was wondering if anybody else uses the same spec as me and system is ok or is having the same problems

thanks

Yep that is low. I'd download Coretemp to find out what the default VID is for your chip and once you have this, go into the BIOS and manually set the vcore to that figure.

thanks guys i did what you said, found out that my cpu core voltage should be i1.2v so ive set it manualy from auto in the bios to 1.2... and as im monitoring my spec it is still the same as above other than my core voltage flickers from 1.088 to 1.168v now... every setting in the bios is set to auto other than my bus rate which is set to 266

You've might have Speedstep/EIST enabled too which lowers the vcore and multiplier when the CPU isn't being used much in order to conserve power. I think most people tend to disable it when overclocking but it's not essential to do so.

thanks for the info el jimben, there was a few to disable to get it runing at normal speed which where EIST function (now disabled) and CPU enhanced halt (c1e) (now disabled) my cpu now runs smoothly at 2.66 mhz, i kept my CPU thermal monitor(TM2) enabled just in case of overheating...

thanks
