I need a watch. I've never worn a watch (except from the Action Man one when I was 5.)

My requirements are:
- Simple
- Black leather strap
- White/silver face. Has to have a round face, and not huge in diameter or thickness.
- £300 maximum

The range Christopher Ward offers seem to nail it for me.

My questions are:
1. What are Christipher Ward watches like? Are they reliable?
2. Except from ordering from the internet, can I buy from the high street shop where I can actually try it on?
3. Are discounts available? I.e. Haggling, sales, etc?
4. I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to watches. Where I can I learn more about them?

Thank you very much! :)

I have two, and highly reccomend them. To answer your questions:

1) Reliable and very well made.
2) No - they are web only
3) They do have a sale in January (see here)
4) Start here

Also, they have a 60 day money back garuntee, so if you don't like it, you can send it back without a problem.

Which ones do you have? :)

A C5 Malvern Automatic (black face) - Pic - for dress, and a C3 Malvern Chrono (Pic) as my everyday watch. I love them both: Good looking, very well made, work perfectly and don't cost the sort of money that would make me scared to wear them....

10% via quidco too ;)

I bought my brother a Christopher Ward watch for his 21st. It's been faultless and with their 60 day refund guarantee if it turns up and you don't like how it looks in the flesh you can always return it.

Christopher Ward watches are just fashion watches, overpriced fashion watches at that, they try and put on a facade of a luxury and a lot of people fall for it.

You can get equal quality swiss ETA powered watches for less, even better you could get a real entry level luxury watch second hand for the prices they charge.

I have 2 and my wife has one, I've had one other too. They use good swiss movements and are well put together. The gaurantee is much longer than the industry norms and you have 60 days to return it even if you just decide you don't like it (I guess they did this to mitigate against the fact they are web only).

Personally I like what they are about as a brand. They offer good value if you like the designs.

I own watches by several brands and while they are not as highly finished as my more expensive watches, they offer the right bang for the buck.

Seems like the watch thread stirred up quite a bit of interest in them - I didn't particularly mean to but they are good. Precista, as I mentioned in that thread are the other one to watch in that price range (timefactors.com) in my view.

The fashion watch thing is bandied around with brands from panerai to CW, all watches are to some degree - I would agree that their quartz watches aren't going to set the world on fire but their workhorse autos are an honest watch at a reasonable price (although they have krept up a bit). I agree the quartz range is too expensive if you buy at list but the autos aren't.

I had a C4 Peregrine. I'm no expert on watches but it was very nice to look at and felt very well built. Was quite heavy but it didn't bother me. Unfortunatley I miss placed it and it's now lost or was stolen from my room at University.

When they quote watch diameters, is that just the face or the whole watch yeah?

Otherwise 42mm face seems rather large

Cheers rotty

Those watches seem alright for daily use, Anything more expensive I'd be worried about damaging them
