I know the above card is a bit dated now but putting together a machine with the following spec and wondering if it is worth considering:

OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G1333LV4GK) £77.64
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £76.99
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £74.99
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail £71.99

I'm not a gamer and the machine is for general use but would Modern Warfare 2 be playable ?

i have a 9800GTX+ and it plays that fine, but to be honest i had it running at pretty good res and settings with my 9500GT so yeah, depending on how much its gunna cost its a pretty good card.

Been looking at the following 5700's:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024MB @ £102.89
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB @ £119.98

but just find it to justify spending more than £100.

My budget was £500 orignally and i'm looking more at £600!

Also looking at

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB @ £101.99

How does these all compare ?

The 4870 is the strongest card there by a few %. It also pulls the most power and makes the most noise and heat (for most people not an issue)

The 5770 is about the same as the 4870 in performance but it pulls way less power and makes little heat and noise. It's problem is it's the most expensive.

The 5750 is about 10-12% slower than both cards above. It pulls less power, creates less heat and noise and is decently priced.

My money is on the 5770 or 5750 depending on what your willing to stretch to. You'll not be dissappointed by any of these cards :)

I've got a similar setup to that which you've posted (check my sig - slightly older components but along the same lines), and although I haven't played MW2 on here I'm certain it would handle the game fine, afterall MW1 was fine (1440x900 res @ full settings) as any other 'demanding' games I've played (OpFlash, Crysis, UT3, GRID, DIRT, CSS, WoW etc) have all been fine. However if you're looking around the £500 mark for a build, if you are planning on building it I'm pretty certain you could get a lot more for your money...

9800GT (if its not the Eco model) would be playable at 1680x res with close to max settings - tho you'd prolly have to turn a few things down from extra to either high or medium - but at 1920x it gonna start feeling the pressure.

On the saving money front, know any students?

W7 can be had for about half it's retail price with a student email account (ac.uk)

If its anything like MW1, with my 8800GT, i only needed to turn off AA to get 60 FPS and 1920x1200 in Single Player, Multiplayer i could always run absolutely full whack without a hitch. Youl probably be more than happy with this card for MW2 :)

Can't see myself playing games like mw2 at 1920x1200. My LCD is a Samsung 913N which has a max resolution of 1280x1204 !

Would buying a 5750 or 5770 be pointless on this screen ? I'm not planning replacing the screen any time soon.

@boozer MW1 Pushed my 8800GTX a little to hard at 1920*1200 (GF's Machine) and it didn't run anywhere near as smooth as my (at the time) 4870 512m. Think I was using 4x aa though.

gib73, I have a old 8600GT and I was able to run MW2 at 1440 x 900 on max settings. The framerate very rarely dropped below 25fps and with an overclock on the 8600GT it ran fine.

You should be fine with a 9800GT and MW2. If you can though it might be worth saving for a 5750 or 5770. With it you'll have a very good setup.

Thanks rhys216, would I notice much difference between 512Mb and 1Gb versions of the 5750 ?

If I play games at 1920*1200 on my Sammy LCD will I any notice any difference from playing at 1280 x 1024 which is the max resolution for the monitor ?

Are you saying force 1920x res on a 1280x native panel? if so all that will do is make the image a blurry compressed mess.

If your happy with your current display I wouldn't be in a hurry to change - but 1920x gaming is a bit nicer.

Will playing games in any resolution greater than the native 1280 be a blurry mess ?

I'm not a big gamer. Haven't played games since HL2 about 5 years ago !
