best cpu cooler for q q6600

I myself have a Megahalems in push pull with the fans running pretty much silently (very low RPM) and I am very happy with it

That sounds like a *mighty* fine cooling set-up there Parsley :)

We are just discussing all the options and comparing experiences that's all, I would have liked to test a Megahalems but they are quite pricey and sadly some people will not be able to afford that kinda money . . . also some people *don't* need that kinda cooling power to get a nice overclock going . . .

For the record could you tell me how much you spent total on your CPU cooling (sink, 2x fans etc)

It works for me, I have lapped the IHS off the Q6600 though so that will help :).

Ah sorry left the pricing out.

I got the Megahalems for about 52 pounds at the time of purcahse. The Enermax fans were bought second hand but they had been barely used (someone splitting their rig) so I picked up 4 for 24 pounds :). So 74 pounds on the CPU cooling. It certainly isn't the cheapest of solutions but I am very happy with its performance so I can't complain.

I will be moving it accross to my next Rig though hopefully!

Damn son you must be an Arab or a Russian! :D

£74 is really big money for cooling alone, I paid £95.41 total for my processor and motherboard! :o

Phew I can't say I'm gonna recommend that combo to anyone except extreme benchers and overclockers, sounds like expensive overkill for a lot of folks here as that kinda cooling power is not needed for the great majority, gratz on being rich but spare a thought for the poor! ;)

Even the Baram may be overkill for peoples needs, but as you say a good cooler can hopefully carry across to another system!

Well the last cooler I actually specifically bought for myself from a retail outlet was for an Athlon XP, cant remember what it was even, the others were either given to me (like the old Tuniq Tower I used to use) or I bought cheap second hand. When I buy I tend to buy with the hopes it will last which is what I have done with my current system. My next upgrade will likely be a new processor/motherboard/ram a year down the line and I am gambling that they release a bracket for the socket, that is if it is even a new one.

The only thing I really splurge on is 3dcards, and even then, my 8800GTX lasted for ages to be sold on to a friend and be replaced with a 4870 which lasted until the 5870 and was also sold on. My 5870 should now last me for a fair while :). Worst comes to the worst I will buy another when they are cheaper and X-Fire.

Regardless I won't be upgrading for at least a year now I think and I have had my core components for ages.

Paying more sometimes pays off in the long term if you are sensible. Im reasonably well off but elsewhere I am a bit of a tightwad with spending on myself so my PC is my treat :).

Also when you look at things like the Corsair H20, what I paid actually worked out cheaper or about the same. Getting the fans cheap helped there.

I believe you have a supremely good air-cooling system there mate! :)

I am just pointing out the fact that for a lot of people this budget will be too great . . .

I would also question the need . . . I say this only because there is an addiction very similar to Overclocking which many of us have had at some time or another and it's called OverCooling

It's easy to spot an OverCooler, they talk a lot about temps, idle temps, load temps, push-pull, static pressure, CFM, different TIM's etc :p

Extreme benchers, powerful workstations etc all need great cooling but unless you are in one of these specialist catagories your in danger of OverSpending!

Nah I don't think I am an overcooler, I don't obsess over it. If I can keep it around 50-55 I am happy.

Or am I? :).

The Tuniq was getting too hot when I had my Q6600 at 3.8, it was fine at 3.6 but I need to add a fair bit of voltage to make it stable at 3.8 so I thought why not upgrade and carry it over to the next system later on and get that little bit extra out of my processor at the same time.

Also I like keeping it as quiet as possible so a good cooler with low spinning fans is helpful!

Guess it seems like I am trying to justify myself here :p.

Sorry! :)

I hope the way I am expressing myself isn't causing you to justify! :p

I wouldn't worry :p, I have managed to convince myself it is a good idea (genuinely) so I wouldn't worry about yourself doing it :).

The upgrade process is more gradual with me, I don't swap out entire systems at once (with regards to the core components; PSU, Ram, CPU, Memory, GPU).

The Tuniq was quite a noisy one wasn't it! Had to have it turned up full for a reasonable overclock. Glad the H50 solved this for me!

The fan was the noisy part, swapping that out made it better but the quieter fans didn't push as air and the tuniq didn't cope so well with loosing the airflow as one would hope, at least not in my case.

The Megahalems doesn't suffer as badly from that in any case, and the added effect of using 2 fans helps even more.

Haha Pneumonic . . . well you were one of the *biggest* addicts of OverCooling! :D

Then you went and got yourself a benchmarking hobby to justify it all! ;)

To be fair though, for anyone who is *really* interested in OverClocking and pushing their hardware to the max you just gotta have a Meat&TwoVeg cooler!

I think Parsley has bought what is arguably the best *mainstream* aircooling solution in the *world* that will still fit into a regular ATX chassis, I would be wanting some Insane results back for that expenditure! :p

I never realised before how Desirable SuperCooling has become, It should obviously be a means to an end:

  • Increase your overclocks beyond what is Possible with lesser cooling
  • Increase the lifespan of your hardware (debatable)
  • Increase the Peace (and quiet)

Slowly but surely the temps have now crept a little into the realms of ePeenie, temps for temps sake? . . it's almost an ostentatious showing of ones cooling prowess! . . . "Hey Baby! . . . . I'm fully loaded at -2°C!"

I think the next useful fad is *Passive* AirCooling for the mainstream . . .
