Hi all,

We're now in a position to change the main car in the household (my Mondeo).

Circumstances have change a little in that in May there will be another member/addition to the family (:D). As a result of which, i'll be using my partners Corsa to run to work and back in (3 door car), and my partner will have the larger car to drive as it will be easier for her to get baby and our other little one in and out of whilst she's on leave.

As much as i love the V6 engine in the Mondeo, it is rather thirsty, and an expense that i don't particularly want increasing when the GF is going to be using the car (which it will, i cover minimal mileage!), so i'm looking to purchase a car with a slightly more economical engine.

First thoughts were... another Mondeo. I had originally budgeted to spend about £5k on a car, realistically i would rather be spending around £4k (ST24 in PX with around £3k cash). This pretty much means ST's are out of the question (220's and TDCI's), so i've been looking at the Zetec S. Does the 2.0 TDCi (130, i think) suffer the the DMF and Injector issues? I've been looking out for the 2.0 Petrol models, but these seem a little harder to come by than the TDCi's, V6 seem plentiful :(

Other options are Octavia vRS, which reasonable ones are just about in budget for. My partner is dead set on a Vauxhall Zafira, but seeing as its my money i have final decision and i don't really want one, although i do quite like them in GSi guise

Constructive input welcome :)

Thanks

All TDCi suffer from the DMF/Injector issues (But then arguably all commonrail diesels suffer injector/turbo issues).

2.0 Zetec-S was a Mk2 - in Mk3 form its V6 or 2.0 TDCi. I think there was a limited run of 2.0 petrol but it was so small you wont find one.

Octavia vRS will cost as much to run if not more than your current V6 Mondeo. Infact is there anything actually wrong with the ST24? Spending £4k to save money on fuel is false economy. If you want a new car for other reasons great but if its purely financial keep the ST24.

OT: Stop calling her your partner, you are not in business or gay lovers :p

I wouldn't ever change a car to save on fuel, i can't remember other forum members names who have used that as an excuse before, but i'm not one of them :p

I just want something newer that i can take a bit more pride in, hasn't got rot creeping up in several places and doesn't creak/rattle inside as much :)

EDIT: There are some 2.0 MK3 Zetec is, but they are very thin in the ground indeed!

If you're after spending around £4k why not look at Saabs?

-Reliable
-Well-built
-Not exactly the thirstiest of cars

2005 4-door SAAB 9-3 1.9 Sport is £5k from a local (to you) car dealership... and that's an automatic :p

Ok, so been on the hunt for a Mondeo Zetec S (TDCI) over the weekend, rather randomly spotted a Zetec S Estate (V6) filling up with a For Sale sign in the back window.

Went over and had a word with the chap, had a look at the FS sign and it was detailed as having FSH, lengthy tax & mot etc. It was on a 52 plate with 90k on the clock. Screen price was £2850, car was immaculate. He said he had no interest the past few weeks, and it going to put it into auction next week if it doesn't move.

Now, for the strange bit, he said it was up for £2850, if i turned up with cash i could have it for £1850. I have a feeling he would take £1500 for it, however doing a deal with a bloke on a petrol forecourt is not my idea of a good purcahse/sale :D

Yeah, less half leather and the heated seats IIRC.

I *may* give him a call and go have a good look at it, all this snow etc meant the car was filthy, although it looked to be in good condition you never can really tell until getting up close for a good look!

Oxford English Dictionary said:

Phil W - how many miles p.a. does she do / what's her commute like?

Miles P.A and commute won't really come into it, she'll only really be using the car for the duration of her maternity leave.

She'll be doing a school run, which will be about 16 miles a day, and i dare say trips to shops, friends etc.

The fuel consumption in the ST24 is a tad silly, i don't borhter working out MPG, i just do the chav way of "miles to £££", £10 takes me roughly 35-40 miles before the fuel light comes on, and thats driving it lightly!

does it not have a trip computer? :s

Its a MK2 Mondeo, it doesn't even have a digital odometer!

No, the ST24 didn't come with the Trip computer that was in the Ghia X etc, couldn't retro-fit it to mine either as apparantly i had 5 wires, what ever that means

Tried to fit one, but it didn't have the loom alreay in the car, required lots of wiring in and i couldn't be bothered :D

On the hunt for a TCDI Zetec-S now, they are either high milers or VERY far away though
