Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a laptop for my new business. I'll be playing with spreadsheets and don't want it to chug away while demoing work to clients. I was originally looking at the Dell Studio 17 with an i7 processor. However, I've heard talk of the newer i5 being introduced into the Inspirion range. Which processor is the better workhorse?

Also, I'd be interested in going for the SSD option over the normal HDD. The storage size doesn't worry me as most of my work documents will be stored back on my server and desktop. The laptop will only be used on site.

Cheers,

Jed.

The i7 will be faster than the i5, but tbh if you are just using it for spreadsheets, there won't be any difference. A Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual Core will be more than enough for your needs tbh.

Some of my spreadsheets have caused my laptop where I used to work to struggle, mainly due to them having hundreds of sumproducts that ground it to a halt. My quad core at home had no trouble though, so I'd rather spend the extra and have too much power as I don't want clients to see the samples struggle ...

Also, do you know what SSD drives Dell use?

Yup, depends how complex the spreadsheets are. I'm sure an i5 would be fine for it though, I upgraded one of our finance guys to a Latitude E6400 and only a high end core 2 duo but he seemed very pleased :)

The Latitudes seem to be very well made in comparison to the Inspiron and Studio laptops, though the Studio XPS series are very well built.

i5 should do you good for a while dude, even a top spec dual core would probably be fine for the job but you can't have too much power :).
