My Nan loves TV and she has to have the best TV she can afford. She's just come out of hospital and she wants to treat herself to a new TV. I recommended the the SAMSUNG UE46B7020. What do you guys think of this state of the art LED TV?

It's normally £1799.95 but I've seen it for £1349.95.

She hasn't a clue about gaming. I read you can brows the net and everything on this TV. I also hear it makes plasmas look like garbage.

Im no expert but i think that last bit is rubbish matey :) its still an lcd, the led is just backlighting.

If she is going to be watching tv on it 99% of the time as most older people do than i'm sure a 42" G10 panasonic plasma would be better and its a great price too :)

Someone with more knowledge will come along soon.

I just read these TVs have caught up with what bonuses plasmas have. As in better colour and better blacks etc and still have the sharpness of an LCD TV.

tbh they make make plasmas look good, as the blacks they produce are very blue, and the picture is far to sharp.

as above the blacks are more blue than most lcds and the picture can be to sharp, plus it sounds terrible, and for the older gen of people sound is realy important.

if she needs the best get the panny 42v10.

No it's not ;)

Don't bother getting an LED backlit tv they offer nothing towards picture improvements. They have a pretty case and are thin, that's what you pay for which is a complete waste.

One of the 42inch panasonic plasmas should do her fine, unless she s watching loads of HD then one of the non-1080p panasonics will be more than adequate for her.

Indeed. The Panny 42 X10 can be had for quite a fraction of that price mentioned in the OP.. and she'll hardly notice any difference...

When I look at the plasmas on in my supermarket they look horrible campared to the LCDs. Really Dull and gray looking. I'm going assume then they haven't set them up correctly.

I find the same thing when I see them in a big high street chain store, but if you see a well configured one the difference is noticeable, but the other way round :)

This isn't true, the black levels on some of the new LED LCD tv's are simply superb. Coupled with great reproduction in colours and no issues with image retention etc I say it's harsh to dismiss them simply for being thinner :/

Except plasma beats them for colour reproduction, and you don't have to view them directly from the front for them to look good. That and the fantastic response times (close to zero), and image retention being a non-issue and the choice is an easy one to make.

I only notice bad viewing angles on very cheap LCDs and many portable LCDs and decent brand and you don't have any viewing angle issues these days. I can lying on my back and looking up at my Sammy and the picture quality is just as good as it is when I'm sat in front of it same goes if I look at the TV at an angle.

I still say the Blacks have no hint of Blue on my LCD. If it did I'd have sent it back if black looked blue. lol

They have come on but they still have damn auto dimming and don't improve the picture at all compared to a great ccfl backlit set. They have a massive premium on and for me are like the BOSE of tv world now.

Marketed as being the best thing ever but in actual fact don't have anything revolutionary or actually useful at all.

Some sets have local dimming now which really works wonders.

I know what you mean about the premium, and will be the first to admit my knowledge is definitely subpar, but on my last visit to a high fi place, the LED tv's really stood out not just asthetically, but in terms of picture quality. Understandably they might look better in a shop, but even so the clarity of the picture was phenomonal. The other traditional LCD screens looked nice, but not one matched them (and they were damn expensive models).

The plasma's looked great as well, indeed the blacks were fantastic, along with just the general image reproduction, but it just didnt look anywhere as vivid or to be colloquiel (and spell it wrong :D) "pleasant".

Just my 0.02 opinion.

But how do you know that any of those sets were calibrated properly, and have you ever seen any of the best sets out there professionally calibrated to know what an accurate picture looks like ;)

These LED sets seem to attract loads of 'detail' comments, but unfortunately that isn't accurate.

I got my granparents the previous gen. 37" Panasonic plasma, they love it. They changed from a 20" Sony CRT.

It's unlikely his gran will have it profesionally calibrated so comparing pro. calibrated sets is a bit of a joke.

Panasonic's "Cinema" mode gives a pretty natural image anyway.

The Samsung LED LCD's look overly-sharp to me, flase edges on surfaces that don't exist.

The real issue with the LED LCD TV though is the speakers are truly awful, due to being so thin! I imagine this is a big problem for an older person.

Definately get a Pansonic X10 Plasma. Either 37 or 42 inch.
