Spare room - Do I rent it to a friend/random/no-one? MONEY!

As long as you do it properly have a random move in. Might turn out to be a top guy/girl
If the mate lives there it might be a mare after a while.

big risk either way, but money is money.

contract end?
if so, are you sure that your protection will cover the mortgage?

I wouldn't have thought it would. was in talking to the bank on Saturday about mortgages and I know this wasn't covered in anything we were offered (and declined as it was a rip off..)

could you not get your mate in and see how it goes. discuss with him any concerns before hand and lay down some rules.
if you are at your gfs often then it might not be so bad as you wont be in each others hair all the time

isn't it crazy how much you can end up resenting someone when you live with them.

They don't even have to do much wrong... human nature is so hostile really isn't it.

I completely agree. I live with 3 other people at Uni in quite a small house. Sometimes the smallest things really wind me up, like leaving the front door wide open when smoking out the front instead of pulling it closed. Not emptying/putting bins out. Sometimes just even getting in the way really annoys me.

As he's your best mate I trust you know him quite well and what his living habbits may be? Some people leave dirty knives on surfaces, others will leave skidmarks in the toilet and some will treat the lounge as their 'second bedroom/closet'. Just make sure he's not going to be constantly winding you up if he does move in!

I'd wait.

Your TC ends in March, and i suspect you'll know a few weeks before that whether they are offering you a pemenent position. At that point then you can deicide what you want to do or need to do. Obviously if you don't get offered a place then go the rent route whilst look for a job, if you do get offered a job then this rent or not rent business is moot as your new salary will be much more than £6.5k than you are on now.

if he is contract and going perm then he is likely to be getting less money as salary compared to his contract rate ;]
