Hi guys,
Been into photography for a while now and am about to purchase an entry-level DSLR. After many hours of comparing the features of the usual 3 (d3000, a230 and 1000d), I settled on the Canon. But now I can't seem to find anywhere that stocks it with the IS version of the kit lens! I'm not sure if this is a deal breaker tbh, as both the Nikon and the Sony have some form of stabilization. I kind of wrote the Nikon off tbh after looking at tests shots and that it has no AEB and is not compatible with all of Nikon's lens offerings. So that left the Sony.. but it's handling seems to be a bit to be desired (I've yet to test it tho), and I prefer the Canon's button layout.

What do you guys think? I've heard the IS version of the 18-55mm is optically superior to the non-IS model as well. It's a bit annoying as the Sony is currently £100 cheaper (after the cash-back offer).. it's just that I'd rather buy into the Canon system for future proofing than Sony's.

Cheers!

You can find lots of people selling off the IS version of the 18-55 kit lens for around £60 as they progress from the kit lens to the higher end stuff, in fact, someone by the name of NightShadow is selling one in the OcUK Members Market for that very price right now.

Skip the 1000D and get a 450D to be honest. Last time I looked the price difference between them was no more than £60 and you're getting a better camera too.

I'm not sure if the 1000D ever came with the IS lens or not. Regardless, I would recommend getting the IS kit lens - not so much for the IS which shouldn't really be a deal breaker, but more because the IS kit lens is better optically. As above, plenty going cheap second hand :)

Second that. There's definite optics difference between the version. The IS also helps cut camera shakes by about 2 to 3 stops.

handling is always a personal thing & what suits 1 person may not another.
Having said that if you don't find the A230 comfortable try handling the larger A500/A550 as the A450 (basically a version without LiveView) is due in shops in February (although being new will be relatively dear during the initial feeding frenzy of those who must buy the latest - wait 3 months & it'll be 30% cheaper ...).

I just found somewhere for £396 with the IS lens, I'm not sure If I can mention them they sell only camera gear.

I bought one earlier this year from them and was happy. I wasn't sure If I'd get into it as much as I have on reflection I maybe should have gone for something better, but then again I may as well learn the basics well with this camera and If I'm still happy into it in 2 years buy an upgrade and pass this onto the Mrs :)
