Got an RNS-E installed by these guys on the weekend. Top service, excellent advice and very reasonable prices.

They even travelled down during the bad weather so as to not cancel appointments.

From what I can tell a VAG navigation retrofit is pretty easy, why didnt you just do it yourself and save a fortune?

Some people would rather pay to have a proper job done?

I know several people that would never even consider touching anything on there car even for the simplest of things. I remember when I changed a wheel once and my mate asked if I was a member of the RAC and we could use her card if wanted :p

They go for almost the same price on auction sites as I paid for supply plus fitting.

Plus I didn't have to wait for it to come from Poland :)

A 'proper job' Whats an inproper job?

My point is that unlike on other cars ie BMW where you must rip the interior to bits and wire in 900 new bits of kit the VAG stuff is single unit and is, at least as far as my understanding goes, relatively plug and play.

Still, if as he says he paid auction price and got fitting included then it sounds like it was a good buy :)

I guess I'm just jealous that VAG have all-in-one units whereas BMW ones are 6 seperate stupidly out of date boxes each of which costing £300 :p

Don't be so pedantic, you know full well what I mean :p - AND you know full well I have no idea how complicated a VAG satnav unit is. Some people would rather pay for someone else to do a job (regardless of it's simplicity), so they know it was done properly and no corners cut etc, and so when others get in they are like "they did a decent job on that, looks proper"

Ok maybe that saying is more of an Essex thing but my point still stands :p

I am not jealous of you :p - Don't ragequit on it half way through now :D

This.

Guy at work today had his car in for an MOT, garage phoned up telling him it failed on brake pads and that the discs are pitted (not a fail but need replacing soon). Mate at work didn't have a clue what pitted meant.

Whereas to me discs and pads = jack the car up on the drive!

Also I've got a few old-school mechanic friends that refuse to touch anything electrical - some people just aren't conformable with some stuff (and with me it's anything I can't google my way out of!)

If you've no idea about the system why come on and state the bleeding obvious

You didn't, you never have, your not the sort of person to do that. I was just making conversation. :)

Provided you have the double din dash installing the RNS-E is very very easy, its actually not that much harder than installing a HU.

In contrast the BMW system looks like a total pig to retrofit.

Cool story bro but TTIUWP of said install, preferably before and after please. I failed to order Sat Nav with my car as it was £ ludicrous. TomTom is ok, but the SatNav would improve the interior I feel, and I was hoping for a cheap retro-fit such as this.

Thanks :).

To be fair Fox, I'm with Phail on this one.
Turn the situation on its head - would you change your spark plugs or oil filter yourself?

Yes if a dealer was going to charge him a fortune to do it (Which when he first posted thought was the case with the op)

I fitted the MFD2 to my Golf V in about 30 minutes. I'd expect it to take about the same in yours.

They are easy to fit and will work if swapped out with the standard radio however to do it properly you need to code the car with Vagcom/VCDS otherwise every time the car is scanned by a garage it will have several fault codes.

No Pics of before/after, it was just a Concert 2 Double-din unit before and now it's an RNS-e so like every other A3 out there.

I would recommend though, and they do a cheap vw unit, £360?
