BMW to go all wheel drive route

Still think this would be a great idea and that they should have done it ages ago. I would buy one over an audi with AWD., and they sell a fair few of them!

They sell lots of AWD Audi's because most of the bigger engined ones are AWD or nothing. So if you want an A5 3.0 for example you will get AWD whether you want it or not.

Also, the alternative to AWD in an Audi is FWD. Which is pathetic.

Well thats true. I just dont see how it cant be done, I am sure they would sell them. Maybe not in vast numbers but its not like the hardware isnt already there, they dont have to invest large amounts of money to make it happen.

(I just want a AWD 335i thats all ;) )

I dont really see why you'd want an AWD 335i over an RWD one. Before the country went bonkers about Snow nobody cared. And they wont care again for the next 7 years either.

Haven't we had snow Last December, February and now this latest spell?
I think global warming is great!

This is what I'd want to see on the BMWs personally and it's something that upsets me about the Quattro Audis (A3, A4, A6 etc, not RS4 etc.) that they don't do it, I'd much rather rear bias to front bias. Saying that, my AWD experiences have been Jeeps and Land Rover Defenders and I'm unsure if they even have a bias. :p

Still, prefer RWD to FWD and the Quattro Audis I have been in just seem like FWD ones to me, didn't feel any different really. What annoys me the most about the Audis though is people that have them assume it means they have AWD/4x4. :/

I was under the impression that Audi's we're as standard a 50:50 split and the new RS models were 40:60 as they had a planetary gear or something. They definately dont front bias I dont think.

Also, I thought Audi were AWD? Given that all 4 wheels are continuously driven and it has a semi locking centre differential. What it doesnt have is front and rear locking diffs, they use the ABS system to lock the slipping wheel instead. My previous car a Nissan Pathfinder was selectable 2WD/AWD/4WD I think, as it had centre diff lock (and yes it wound up on tarmac :)).

I can tell you that the system on my A6 has been great in the snow :) Only thing thats lets it down is the wide summer tyres etc. I couldnt believe how much difference it was making until I tried venturing out in the missus corsa which couldnt even make it up the street!

Aye, it's a 50:50 split on the Quattro system, which is permanent AWD apart from the RS4 which is 40:60, not sure about the S models. The R8, as mentioned, has a Quattro system heavily weighted with rear bias, something like 20:80 and again, permanent AWD.

A decent AWD system is fantastic, even moreso given our roads and weather and with the right car, the fastest way to cover ground in the UK. The 997 Turbo apparently has a new progressive system with PTV but right now, until things progress a bit further, I'd still take the GT-R ATTESA-ETS with 100% rear bias and all the gubbins.

ermm, no. This is a 330xi

edit - way too slow.

Interesting - that has suspension turret reinforcement plates (standard 2wd models other than M3 don't). Wonder if they're designed to be thrown about on rough surfaces.
