I am going back to compact as I never take my SLR out as I can never be bothered to be honest to lug it around!

I just think I will take far more pictures with something I can have in my pocket. So the Nikon D80+ battery grip and Nikkor 18-55 VR and 50mm prime are going to be sold the question is how much would a be able to get for these??? I have all boxes

And recomend me a good compact with a good optical zoom

Thanks

Going by recent for sales, i'll go for £285-300 for the D80 (not sure on grip), and can't really help with the lenses. The 50mm changes pricing too often :p

Do you want compact, so size matters, or just smaller than a DSLR? The GF1 is a lovely camera, does depend on what you want to shoot though. The G11 is good too.

As with syke asked, I think you're more about convenience than full DSLR IQ?
If so, the suggested Panny GF1 gets my vote if you still want the possibility of interchangeable lenses. There are the slightly larger but still very light four third cameras like Olympus E620 but if those are still too big, you'll be looking at even smaller sensor like the Lumix X3 or Canon's G10/11 - but they're of fixed lens variety so abit less versatile, but pocketable.

Really I want somthing pocketable so much smaller than SLR was thinking maybe Canon G11 although that is a little brick isnt it?

dont really want to change lens to be honest will be nice to not have to worry about dust on the filter

so G11 sort of size or smaller really??

sent yo email through trust about the 50mm

Well it depends if you want 'zoom' too, the G11/GF-1 are large, but both get brilliant sharpness. I guess if the zoom factor isn't a big thing, LX3? Not tiny, but you don't want something just because it's small, you'll lose a lot of the IQ from what you're used to.

I've just got the Canon S90

I'ts similar to the Panasonic GF1 but has longer reach and is slightly smaller

I'm loving it so far but find the controls just a tad annoying sometimes, the real test will come when I go on my hols soon

heres an example shot

How much did you pay for the S90? I'm after a compact but the price is a little off putting. Had a play with one and liked the controls, the ring seemed to work well.

Id vote for the G11 too. It has RAW functions too so if you do need to use it. You can add adapter lenses if you want. Its nice brick shape and its rugged.

If not go for the Canon S90 as suggested above

Hmm well it is £429 for the G11 and £345 for the S90 I think maybe the G11 is the better bet out of the two??

anything else to consider at the moment I am tempted with the G11 way way back I had The G3 and did really like it :)

Thanks for the picture JBuk nice shot :)

Sold my D80, grip and lenses and went for the GF1.
Love it. Nice and compact and the 20mm lens is a cracker.

Shoots RAW as well, even though i shoot both RAW and Jpg since the fancy film modes in the camera arent applied to the RAW files.

I paid £320 , yeah it's not cheap but for the size of it and the image quality I think it's worth paying the extra although I had other camera gear to sell to help fund the purchase so it was an easier decision for me :p

The S90 is similar to the G11 but condensed into a really small body, this is why I chose it as I wanted something that gave me excellent image quality but I could also stick in my pocket and forget about, the G11 is superior but it's also a lot bigger and twice as heavy.

Nice image I am tempted Is it as quick as the D80 for focusing ??

Thanks.
Its pretty quick to lock focus. About on par with the D80.
GF1 will do focus tracking which is usefull, plus there is the face recognition stuff and if you want you can define your own focus area and move it round.
Lots it can do and im yet to really push it.
I either shoot normal or use the "dynamic B&W" film mode.

Moved from the D80 due to issues with my arm/hand and the weight of D80 getting to much.

Dynamic B&W film mode, straight from the camera with a crop.

Shoei, you have any full size images I can have a look at? Kind of interested in the GF-1.

My Flickr is best place to look.

and my 365 set

Some may be cropped, a few are jpg's straight out the camera and some are RAW that have been lightroomed.

Then there is the flickr GF1 group.

slightly off topic but how does the GF1 compare to the Olympus Pen EP1.im currently trying to decide between the two but can currently get the Pen for £520 with the 14-42 (also Olympus are offering a free flash unit with this via redemption right now) where as the GF1 is considerably more (prices i have seen are around £449 body only ,£699 for the 14-45 or 20mm depending on where you look).
