1984: A Sikh Story

Some people yes, we dont view these as real sikhs because it goes against the FOUNDATION of the religion. Sikhism is probably the most tolerant religion in the world =/

More than likely they don't consider you real sikhs either.

Firstly, I am not religous at all, but I was raised Catholic.

The problem is quite simply the same as all religions. The "Rules" or "Holy Texts" or "Bible" or "Qur'an" are all open to interpretation by us, the pety humans of the world, trying to understand this all powerful beings will. Seems kind of a non-starter to me.

It probably doesn't help that he decided to write so many, often conflicting, holy books too. Maybe a concise, clear, single text would have been a better idea?

Maybe the all powerful-god-being has many arms and it was just a very literal take on "The right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing"

In all fiarness how often do you hear of voilence and Sikhs in the news?

Rarely.

I would hazard a guess that it is somewhat more common in India but there have been a couple of cases in the UK and Europe.

Maybe the all powerful-god-being has many arms and it was just a very literal take on "The right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing"

The problem with that is it would then contradict a couple of those holy books that suggest an all-knowing God.

Google sikhism, you will find that we treat everyone equally. Men are not higher than women and we dont repress other religions, it is about a fair world in which everyone can choose what they believe in. The texts are not violent. The texts were written by real people and it was not just one person.
The book was eventually added to by gurus over the years that were chosen by the previous gurus. They were probably very intelligent people that simply wanted the world to be a better place. They did say their teachings were from god but i cannot confirm or deny this, heck they could have been crazy people but the point is the religion is about prosperity for ALL people.
We seek peace not war. Basically its pretty hard to translate the texts in a violent way.

I better not say anything else untill i actually read up about my religion but that is my general gist of it living within a sikh family.

So basically god is some sort of schizophrenic with multiple personality disorder who delights in making conflicting religions with commands about killing non believers?

That or he's very dim in not thinking people would corrupt such a message, and would have been better off never giving people religion and just judging them on their actions at the ends of their lives.

The second paragraph somes up pretty well what I think a "god" would do if one were to exist.

Still shot Indira Gandhi over 30 times.

Why?

What makes you think he made you with an eternal afterlife?

Why not just this is your life be happy you've got 70 years not none.

That works too. Now stop grilling me as if I am trying to force religion on people, I don't care what anyone else believes, and frankly thats what it should be. Each to their own beliefs, end of, make up your own god damned minds!

You should probably read up more about gandhi... and no im not trying to justify anything. I think the people that shot her must have felt like they were killing hitler.

Are you religious btw tefal? Just trying to understand your hate towards the religion.

what hate?

All I've done is disagree with your notion that the whole religion believes in the same attitude when it clearly doesn't.

First you say skihs don't use We dont use god to justify evils when the sikh above you did.

Then you say you're all non violent when two of them murdered the pm.

It's just the blatant lies religious people say about their religion that annoy me :)

And my view is agnosticism, have seen no proof either way so don't know if there's a god.

No god currently influences the world in any detectable way so no point in choosing one religion over the other when they all have equal numbers of people claiming to have been touched/spoken too by god etc.

Usually telling them that they are saved and everyone else is damned giving them free reign to condemn us all to hell etc.

.

Just speaking to my Sikh mate about this. We're taking his son to Amritsar in summer and travelling around India. He says relations between Hindus and Sikhs have improved somewhat recently, especially now a Singh is the PM. Would you agree?

He had his take on Operation Blue Star in that Jarnail Singh shouldn't have fled to the Golden Temple but the Indian military really should not have went in like they did.

I don't think Indira Gandhi was 'whiter than white' while in power and she was somewhat corrupt. Reading Wiki (yeah, yeah) the idea of forced sterilisation seems a little harsh...

But yeah, I agree that Sikhs are extremely tolerant and their treatment of women as equals makes Catholicism look wanting.
