7.0+ earthquake and Tsunami warning in Haiti

Defo Tsunami then.

E? Aftershocks have nothing to do with tsunamis. They are a standard feature of earthquakes and just the plates releasing a little more stress after the big one.

Tsunamis are caused by movement in the sea floor (uplift) due to larger earthquakes or by slides, slips and slumps (yes they are different things) caused by the earthquakes. These slides slips and slumps can be the cause of apparent aftershocks but they are usually much lower (around 2-3 on the scale).:)

Anyway looks like there shouldn't be much of an issue with Tsunamis as a localised one would have occured very soon after (few minutes to half an hour or so) and we should have heard about one by now. :)

I'm in the Cayman Islands right now, directly in the path, this could be fun.

Cayman was not on warning list and it looks like everywhere will be ok in respect of a potential Tsunami

In that case get your surf board out for some nice waves.

On a more serious not, those aftershocks alone would terrify most in England. Any idea on death toll projections? Hope it isn't too bad!

just says "dozens" at moment but could be anything in reality

Not that it should be funny, but that advert that came up for me before the story there, was on how Intel is helping with earthquake research and has a guy pretending to be being shaken about. Bad taste, advert's with keywords in or complete coincidence?

I don't know why I laughed at that.

Hopefully the death toll won't be too high, but this is Haiti, it's probably going to be catastrophic to the poor people who live there.

Just a bit of a coincidence really.

Like it would be funny, but probably coincidental, if a news report about wacko Jacko was surrounded by sleeping pill adverts. *

*in the USA.

Or a programme regarding Jade Goody being surrounded by condom adverts.

Aftershocks and earthquakes create Tsunami's when developed at sea, there is past occassions where this has happened.

i feel sorry for them , i have felt a 6.0 R scale earthquake and it was scary enough. But the scale of damage indicates buildings there have no anti-seismic protection whatsoever...

Yes, I said that...

However just because there is an aftershoch doesn't mean there will be a tsunami.

You get aftershocks in all earthquakes be it on land or at sea and they have nothing to do (most of the time) with Tsunamis, it's all to do with the strain in the plates equalising after the main quake. Plate boundaries aren't smooth (not even a single line but an area up to a few hundred Km each side of the "boundary" but that's another matter) so once there is enough strain to overcome the friction between the plates you get the main quake. After the main quake and loss of strain there will be several small bits (where plate boundaries jut into each other) where the strain will have increased massively due to the big quake, these can then go off causing the smaller aftershocks as the plate boundary settles down again.

Aftershocks can be caused by slumps, slips and slides that can subsequently cause a tsunami but the vast majority of the time that isn't the case so proclaming just because there are a couple of aftershocks that it's definately a tsunami is a little silly.

Aside from the fact most tsunamis will be caused by the original main quake. If you want I can pull out a few references to papers that deal with both aftershocks and one that deals with a possible aftershock (think it was a very low power one) that may have been caused by a massive slump that caused a tsunami (However the paper coldn't be certain whether the aftershock caused the slump or the slump caused the apparent aftershock).;)

The Richter scale is also a log scale so a 7.0 would be 10 times more powerful than a 6.0.

The "good" thing about it being a poor country is that less concrete etc is used meaning less victims crushed under heavy loads. However it stands to be seen how many people subsequently die due to the inability to treat wounds and water/food issues.
