40 year coma

Poor girl.

Seriously though, in that position I wouldn't want to be kept alive, not even for more than a few days. Surely that's my prerogative, or do modern medical practises force life support on all coma patients?

The shock of waking up so long afterwards will kill her, surely?

Thats what i was thinking earlier when i read that, at the very least it would be a massive freak out episode id think. I wonder to her how much time has passed? For all we know to her it would be like she aged 40 years in a nights worth of sleep.

But also, think of the mother and sister who spent/spend their time looking after her... she is effectively destroying their life (through no fault of her own)... I doubt she will wake up, and I really can't imagine how she would feel if she did.... must be hard for the relatives though, probably worse than if she just died :(

I would like to be kept alive for about 3 years most, and then just turn all the machines off because realy, there's not point using all that money, time and emotion to care for what is, in effect a person shaped piece of meat.

That bit in bold, is a terrible thing to say, maybe you said it because you have no emotional ties to those poor people.

Human emotion is a funny thing isnt it, if it was one of my family I would care for them just as much.....and Im sure 99% of you in here would. Holding onto the fact that they will wake up one day.

Yeah, it probably is very difficult if you do actually know them, but looking at it from a detached perspective, they really are a bag of meat... I would hope that after a few years of looking after me someone would persuade whoever was looking after me to leave me alone, because it sounds like the care required has ruined the mothers life, and is currently ruining the sisters life.

P.S. ...your name :o

I bet the family wouldn't have it any other way though, family do that sort of thing for each other.

I would feel the same way as you if I was in that condition though.

There is a chance that she is "conscious" inside her head as was suggested recently when that bloke woke up from a 23 year coma and stated that he could hear and was aware everything throughout it all...

Gee, imagine being trapped like that for 23 years...

Damn that would be a pretty awful experience.

Wasn't that the guy who was paralysed and incorrectly diagnosed as in a coma?
